Ragging in NIT: Tripura government for stern action

Agartala, July 21 (IANS) The Tripura government has asked the National Institute of Technology (NIT) here to take strict action against senior students for allegedly ragging freshers, officials said here Monday. “We have asked NIT authorities to submit a report to the state government about incidents of ragging,” said Madhusudhan Bhattacharjee, director of the Tripura higher education department.
Said Higher Education Minister Anil Sarkar: “We have asked NIT to take stern action against the accused students and the Tripura government will not tolerate any kind of ragging.”
Some senior students of the institute had allegedly physically and mentally tortured juniors, including a few girls, during the past few days.
NIT authorities said the victims later lodged a complaint with them. While some of the freshers have stopped attending classes, a few have already left the hostel.
“We have identified some students and formed an anti-ragging committee to inquire into these incidents,” said NIT director S.C. Saha.
“After getting the report, appropriate action would be taken against students found guilty,” he added.
