Lucknow, Oct 17 (IANS) About 50 medical students of the Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj University (CSMMU), better known as King George’s Medical University, have fled their hostel fearing ragging by senior students, an official said Friday. The first year M.B.B.S. students escaped Thursday night from the New Chakravati Hostel of the varsity. They also clashed with security men and other varsity employees who came in their way, the official added.
“An inquiry has been ordered into the incident to know why the students escaped en masse,” said CSMMU proctor G.P. Malik.
“Even as we have taken every measure to curb ragging, it is still to be confirmed whether they were being ragged inside the hostel,” he added.
Officials say the students may have run away to their homes and may return only after Diwali.
The students alleged that on the pretext of seeking an introduction, the senior students harassed them physically and mentally.
“They (the senior students) always ill-treat us and use foul language against us. When we voice objections, they threaten us with dire consequences. As a result, at times, such incidents go unreported,” said a first year MBBS student, who hails from Kanpur.
