Aligarh varsity fines nine students for ragging

From correspondents in Uttar Pradesh, India, 05:01 PM IST
Nine management students at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) have been penalised for ragging freshers in a varsity hostel, an official of the university said Sunday.
Depending upon their involvement in ragging, fines ranging from Rs.500-2,500 have been slapped on the nine students of the Master of Business Administration course.
'Although the ragging did not involve any physical abuse, the seniors were mounting mental pressure on the junior students on the pretext of taking their introduction,' AMU proctor Muzaffar A. Siddiqui told IANS on phone.
The fine that has been slapped on the students will serve as a deterrent for others, he added.
AMU plans to bar the nine students from availing the hostel facilities, the official said.
