PATNA: In a case of ragging otherwise not very commonplace in Bihar, a BA Part I (History) student of Patna College was on Monday brutally assaulted after senior students failed to strip him.

The incident took place during a freshers’ day function on the campus which was attended, among others, by the college principal. Even while the function was on in the college’s seminar hall, Ashutosh Ranjan came out to go to the loo. he was intercepted by a group of six-seven students, including BA Part II (Maithili) student Vikas Kumar, intercepted him near the toilet and asked him to run to and from in the corridor.

Ashutosh, a resident of Bazar Samiti area, further told police while he thought how to react, one of the seniors tried to unzip his trousers while another forced his hand into the trousers’ pocket. When he resisted, he was hit on his back by a rod and showered with fisticuffs.

The badly bruised boy rushed to the nearby Pirbahore police station. In the raids that followed, Vikas was arrested from the Minto Hostel. Ashutosh was sent to PMCH for treatment.

The college authorities, however, refused to accept it as a case of ragging. “It could be a result of personal enmity,” a college official said, adding the incident would be probed.
