NIZAMABAD: Anumalla Achutakrishna is not in the right frame of mind to go back to his college to pursue his MBBS first year course. A victim of mindless ragging by seniors at the Kakatiya Medical College (KMC) in Warangal, the student of Nizamabad town is petrified by the episode so much so that his family has decided not to send him back to KMC.
Ironically, Achutakrishna, 17, underwent the torture on Day One (August 3) of his joining the college. Recounting his nine-hour ordeal in the KMC hostel on Monday, Achutakrishna said: "I was not allowed to sit from 5 pm to 1.30 am as the seniors (one after the other) kept ragging me. It was my first day in the college."
Holding back his tears, the student said: "When I asked for some water, they forced me to consume beer and smoke a cigarette." He continued: "I was asked to take off my shirt and dance as they clapped and whistled. It was disgusting." Much worse followed later, both physical and mental assaults, he said.
Achutakrishna, a resident of Yellammagutta in Nizamabad town, had got medicine seat in reputed national institutions but opted for KMC as some of his friends had also joined the course here. Shocked and numbed by the incident, he rushed to his home on August 4. He had done his Intermediate from Sri Chaitanya College in Hyderabad.
Seething with rage over the action of senior students, his father A Satyanarayana, an orthopaedic surgeon in Nizamabad, said it was shocking that freshers have no security in colleges where they enter with a lot of hope.
"My son has gone into deep depression. Who will be held responsible if he resorts to some extreme step? Will the college come to our rescue?" he sought to know. Satyanarayana alleged that the college management is trying to shield the guilty students. He wanted the government to accommodate his son in another college. "Otherwise, I will move the court and wage a legal battle," he asserted.
Crying inconsolably, the boy's mother Sivarani said: "We will not send our boy to the college where there is no security to the lives of juniors. We will rather forego the MBBS seat."
Meanwhile, police in Warangal filed cases against eight seniors and arrested four of them. The arrested students included Raj Kumar, Rajesh, Vikram and Srinivas. Cases were filed after the juniors filed a complaint at Mattewada police station. "We have launched a manhunt to nab the other accused students," CI K Surender said.
