CHANDIGARH: Panjab University authorities suspended a second-year student of University Institute of Engineering and Technology -- Saurabh Nandel -- from the department and hostel on Saturday. The action came after some students of department of Indian theatre accused Nandel of ragging a first-year UIET student during late Friday night. Nandel’s junior had submitted a written complaint against him with PU. A complaint against him was also lodged with the police.
Sources said that the ragging victim, who is from Noida, was parking his motorcycle in hostel no. 2 on Friday night, when four of his seniors called him and sought his introduction (a euphemism for ragging). As he spoke in English, they objected and told him to talk in Hindi, sources added.
They said that Nandel then asked him to kill all the mosquitoes under a streetlight and threatened that he will also have to parade like Phantom (walking while wearing his briefs over his trousers).
Sources said that students of department of Indian Theatre, who were passing from there, noticed this and asked their UIET counterparts to let the victim go. That led to a confrontation between the groups and the hostel’s warden was informed.
Afterwards, university authorities formed a panel to look into the matter.
Sources said Nandel left for his house in Rohtak during the intervening night of Friday and Saturday. However, PU authorities said he was in constant touch with them and would be returning on Sunday.

It may be possible that these students are not the culprits but victims themselves. Anti-ragging law can be used against these students and it will destroy their bright future. May be these students are falsely implicated. It is important to think about the misuse of anti-ragging law.
