Panel to probe defunct RBI unit's functioning

http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2012-11-30/vadodara/35484631_1_syndicate-members-m-m-beedkar-tushar-vyas

VADODARA: The syndicate members of M S University (MSU) on Friday constituted a four-member committee to probe the functioning of Reserve Bank of India's Endowment Unit in the last 10 years. The committee has been asked to submit its report within six weeks.

The decision comes in the wake of embarrassment that the university faced last week after country's apex bank dragged the state university to an Ahmedabad court by filing a civil suit demanding recovery of Rs 97,63,000 for not appointing a RBI chair professor at the Department of Banking and Insurance in the Faculty of Commerce even as it had received Rs 50 lakh as corpus fund in 2002.

While MSU vice-chancellor professor Yogesh Singh had already decided on Thursday that the university will stop all the expenses of the defunct RBI Endowment Unit and the Rs 10,000 per month that university's deputy registrar M M Beedkar was drawing as remuneration over and above his own salary from the defunct unit, the syndicate's decision will now create way for a detailed inquiry on mismanagement of the unit.

The four members of the committee are professor Ranjan Aiyer (convener), professor Aarti Nanavati, K S Agrawal and Tushar Vyas. During their meeting the members also cleared a proposal of signing MoU between university's Department of Archaeology and Ancient History and US-based Stone Age Institute subject to permission from Gujarat government. The syndicate members have given their approval for allocating land at Maharaja Pratapsinhrao Gaekwad Parisar (Donor's Plaza ground) for constructions of buildings of Department of Pharmacy and Institute of Policy Research and International Studies.

Proposals of research projects of Department of Biochemistry and Department of Applied Chemistry were approved by the syndicate members. Also, the members have decided to continue services of retired employees - P N Srivastava and Ashok Pandya - at the university press - for a period of another six months as a special case. MSU's syndicate members have regretted a request made by city-based Navrachana University for refund of the fees that the latter had paid for issue of no objection certificate for running courses in MSU's jurisdiction.

BOX: Second committee to probe ragging allegations against teacher Vadodara: Another committee was formed to probe the allegations against a teacher, who is accused of ragging a first year student. After a first year student of Department of Architecture at Faculty of Technology and Engineering alleged last month that a teacher - Mayur Gupta - along with a group of senior students was involved in his ragging, MSU had formed a committee under professor R G Kothari to investigate the teacher's role. The Kothari committee, however, absolved the teacher for want of evidence.

The committee's report states that although the teacher might have used language that might have hurt somebody, there is no evidence of his involvement in the ragging episode. On Friday, the report was tabled before the syndicate members. The syndicate members, however, formed a three-member committee comprising Tushar Vyas, Dr Kamal Shah and Dr Hemant Mathur to further investigate Gupta's role.

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/msu-professor-held-for-ragging-student/1019983/

Mayur Gupta of architecture dept allegedly joined a group of students in ragging a first-year student A faculty member at M S University of Baroda was on Saturday arrested for allegedly ragging, along with senior students of his department, a junior student on the campus, police said.

“Prof Mayur Gupta of the Department of Architecture was apprehended on charges of ragging first-year student Harshvardan Sutariya on the campus,” Sayajigunj Police Inspector A B Saiyed said. “We have recorded statements of officials of the architecture department as the part of investigations and arrested Gupta under sections 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement), 143 (punishment for being a member of unlawful assembly), 203 (K) (giving false information respecting an offence committed) of Indian Penal Code (IPC),” he said.

The incident came to light after Harshvardhan’s father Ramesh Murar Sutariya filed a complaint with police two days ago. Police said a video clip showing the ragging incident involving Gupta and senior students, including a girl, was submitted by the complainant, besides other documents including recordings of conversations on Harshvardhan’s mobile phone. Student files ragging complaint to settle scores

http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2012-09-12/ahmedabad/33788297_1_formal-complaint-student-files-security-personnel

AHMEDABAD: A student of Parul Pharmacy College, Vadodara, filed a complaint of allegedly being beaten up by his seniors at the highest level on the anti-ragging helpline of the University Grants Commision (UGC). Later, when the UGC ordered an inquiry, the boy did a volte face and said that he had reported a false complaint to settle personal enmity.

The boy, a first year student of pharmacy, had earlier said in his complaint to the UGC that his seniors united under a gang called 'Parul gang', summoned him behind the administration building of the college and bashed him up. The student alleged that the gang members also broke his specs. He said he had complained to the principal of the college who did not file a formal complaint. Fearing that his harassment would continue, he filed a complaint with UGC's 24-hour anti-ragging helpline.

Following the complaint, the UGC directed both the college as well as GTU to inquire into the matter and send a report within 24 hours. The registrar of GTU said that action would be taken once the report is submitted.

However, the student later withdrew the complaint and changed his story, claiming that he was being harassed by security personnel and not his seniors. In a letter submitted to the UGC, the student wrote, "The complaint registered on the ragging incident did not actually fall under the criteria of ragging, and indiscipline of security personnel is not ragging. So l wish to withdraw my complaint which was done in anger. I did not approach the anti-ragging committee on campus or the college though there is a prominent display of notice boards announcing the same. There were no student gangs in Parul, the security personnel are those responsible for this incident."

Rajesh K S, principal of the college, said the incident was merely a disciplinary issue between the student and the security staff which was due to the student's undisciplined behavior towards security personnel.

"The student had just submitted a complaint against the external security personnel that was totally unrelated to ragging", the principal said.

Three suspended from government medical college for ragging first year post-graduate student

http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2012-08-23/surat/33341282_1_student-medical-reports-graduate

SURAT: Authorities at the government medical college (GMC) have suspended three students on the charges of having ragged a junior. The three had allegedly mentally and physically harassed a first year post graduate student during the last one month. Some of the junior doctors and faculty members are of the opinion that the case is being covered up due to political pressure. Following repetitive mental and physical torture, Pratik Katariwala of surgery department had submitted a written complaint to the dean of GMC G R Patel earlier this week. An inquiry was initiated in the matter.

Finding the allegations true, Imran Shaikh, a third year post graduate surgery student was suspended for two years from the college. Two others Bhushan Kharche and Shailesh Patel, both second year post graduate students of the same department were suspended for one year each. "Medical reports proved that the student was victimized by his seniors. Taking disciplinary actions the seniors were suspended from the college," said Patel. In the three incidents of ragging reported over the last two years, the GMC has not initiated legal action against the accused. In this case Katariwala got his medical examination done and filed a medico legal case. "We have not lodged a police complaint as the student had filed a medico legal case.

Now the police will do its work," said Patel. Sources within the GMC informed that one of the three accused has the support of a political leader from Uttar Pradesh and this is preventing GMC from taking legal action in the matter.

Panel to probe slapping of intern doctor at NCH

SURAT: The issue of an intern doctor being slapped by a resident doctor in Government Medical College (GMC) located in New Civil Hospital (NCH) campus fizzled out on the second day with authorities saying that the incident does not amount to ragging.

However, on the demand of intern doctors, a three-member committee has been formed to look into the incident. The committee will submit its report on Thursday.

Talking to TOI, GMC dean Dr G A Patel said, "It was an isolated incident and doesn't classify as ragging because it was not preplanned act of a group on another group. However, we will decide on the future course of action after the committee submits its report." Close to 100 intern doctors, who went on strike on Monday, resumed work and the situation returned to normal at NCH. A resident doctor Amol Jadhav had slapped an intern doctor Ujjawal Devaliya on Sunday following arguments over a petty issue.

The committee consists of head of psychiatry department Dr Ritambhara Mehta, head of PSM department Dr N D Kanthariya and head of forensic department Dr Ganesh Govekar.

Dr Govekar said, "We are in the process of investigations, but it doesn't look like an incident of ragging." Dr Mehta said, "The committee is constituted to find if it was the incident of ragging or not. We are yet to arrive at the conclusion." Meanwhile, an intern doctor said on the condition of anonymity, "We are working today, but waiting for the report. We will not tolerate such behaviour from resident doctors. If they don't punish the guilty, we will resume our agitation." tnn

Ragging attempt at Polytechnic: Senior chases junior with knife

Scenes like straight out of a Bollywood film played out at Government Polytechnic College in Ambawadi on Monday when a senior student of the institute ordered his junior to drop his pants and later chased him with an open knife when the latter refused to oblige. In the end, police managed to caught the senior after the junior shouted for help.

The incident took place at 3:30pm when three friends Mayank Desai, Sawan Barot and Nagji Desai, all first year student of the institute were chatting at their college gate. Meanwhile, a black Swift car pulled in and their senior Dhiraj Rathod came out of it his five friends.

"Rathod came to us asked me to lower my pants. As I refused, he took a knife out of his car and charged towards me. We all three ran for our life and cried for help. Hearing my shouts, policemen stationed on our campus gave a chase to Rathod and nabbed him," Desai said.

Desai has lodged a written complaint with the college authorities and is now waiting for the response of the anti-ragging committee of the institute.

When quizzed on the incidence, in-charge principal of college, professor NR Pandya said, "Yes, it is true that we have received the written complaint and we are looking into it. After probe, we will take appropriate action," he said.

However, the professor added that they would not take any rash decision in the matter. "We don't want to tarnish any student's image by lodging a police complaint. Hence after the committee has decided upon the issue and if the senior is found guilty, we shall lodge a complaint." Sources claimed that two days back, few students had created a ruckus inside the college campus and Rathod was one of troublemakers.

Authorities turn blind eye as L D hostel students suffer

Tuesday’s incident in which a fresher was reportedly slapped by a drunk senior has created panic among other students. They fear the worst is not over yet as outsiders continue to frequent the engineering hostel without anyone checking them Tuesday night’s alleged ragging of a fresher by senior students after reportedly consuming alcohol at the L D engineering college hostel has not only created a sense of fear among hostel inmates, but is also indicative that the worst might still be waiting to happen if the authorities continue to turn a blind eye to the problem.

A day after the incident, the matter was handed over to the anti-ragging committee, a student was ousted from the hostel and the police were trying to trace the ‘guilty’ students. But this has done little to create a sense of security among the inmates, who continue to live amid fear. The authorities need to wake up and take some concrete measures to avoid recurrence of such incidents, many students complained.

Barely a year ago, a 30-year-old man was stabbed to death on the hostel premises in a brawl that followed a drinking session in a hostel room. Though none of those involved in the incident were college students, they had gathered for a booze session in the room, and then got into a brawl.

A number of students, university staff and security personnel whom Mirror spoke to after the Tuesday incident, mentioned that the interference of outsiders, who would frequent the hostel without any check, consumption of liquor and harassment of junior students was quite common in the hostel, with the authorities turning a blind eye to such incidents.

A security personnel of Gujarat Industrial Security Force (GISF) even alleged that everything was happening with the consent and knowledge of college authorities. “The rector himself has been having booze sessions with some of the inmates. How do you expect him to stop such activities? Such booze sessions and brawls are common with outsiders easily gaining access and there is no sense of security among the students,” he said.

The college authorities admit they can do little to prevent entry of antisocial elements into the hostel, but denied the involvement of officials in such activities.

“No official from the college is involved and such allegations are baseless. If a security personnel finds anyone involved in such activities, he should bring it to the notice of authorities or nab the persons who are involved,’’ said L D engineering college Principal M N Patel.

Patel also claimed that under given circumstances, it was not possible for the authorities to keep a check on such incidents. “There are too many entry points to the premises, all of which cannot be closed. If any of the security personnel or students notice anyone indulging in such activities, they should bring it to the knowledge of authorities,” he said, adding, “it was practically not possible to keep a watch on all 1,000 students who are staying in 240 rooms of hostel.”

However, security personnel and students maintained that whenever authorities were apprised about such incidents, they did little.

In his complaint to the Gujarat University police station, Ashish Sorathiya has alleged that the rector whom he approached after the incident, tried to hush up the matter. “Instead of showing any concern about the incident he asked me to give him a written complaint about the incident. He did not show any interest in getting to the bottom of the issue, nor did he accompany me to the police station,” Sorathiya said.

The police file

In his complaint to the police, Sorathiya, who is a first year student and had come to stay in E block, room number 520 two days ago, said, “Around 8.30 pm when he was watching his two roommates playing chess, Satyam Modi and Neel Patel along with a few others came there from another room where they had had a drinking session. Modi, who was drunk, asked Sorathiya to show respect to his seniors and address him as Bhai.

Neel Patel, who too seemed to be under the influence of liquor, slapped him. A frightened Sorathiya, mentioned this to some other students who were from his region. Soon a call was made to the local police control room. Sorathiya and some other students then went to meet rector N K Arora, who asked him to give a written complaint about the incident. Later he filed a non-cognizable complaint against Satyam Modi, Neel Patel and four others at the Gujarat University police station.

Police Inspector S J Vagasiya, who is looking into the complaint, said going by the version of complainant and others, the incident does not appear to be that of ragging. “We are trying to reach out to the students named in the incident but they are not traceable,’’ he said.

Action taken by college

According to L D Principal M N Patel the matter has been handed over to the anti-ragging committee, which will give its report within a week. “Before drawing any conclusion we should await the findings of the report,” he said. Both, Satyam Modi, and Neel Patel who are in seventh semester will not be eligible for placements, he said.

During the initial probe it has been found that Modi was staying illegally in the hostel. Neel Patel, who also faces allegations of ragging, meanwhile has been barred from the hostel till the anti-ragging committee submits its report. Parents of both the students have also been summoned.

The principal also assured that if it is proved that the students were involved in ragging, their admission would be cancelled.

No takers for rector’s post

NSUI, meanwhile, has given a memorandum to the principal seeking removal of Rector Dr N K Arora for his “inaction and irresponsible’’ behaviour. The memorandum said he showed no concern towards the affected students and did not act responsibly.

Even though present rector is facing allegations of indifference and being hand-in-glove with the students who were indulging in unlawful activities including boozing, there has been a reluctance on part of the university staff to take up this post.

Apart from dealing with as many as 1,000 students in the hostel, many of whom would not mind flouting their proximity to political parties and heavyweights, the post comes with no incentives such as house rent allowance and restriction on movement. With hardly any member of the faculty showing willingness to take up the responsibility, they are forced to take up this post, with an assurance of a change after a while.

College authorities suggest that instead of such a ‘stop-gap arrangement’ the responsibility to manage college affairs should be handed over to a trust or private security agency.

Anatomy of clashes

L D College of Engineering hostel, which houses 1,000 students from different regions is not new to brawls and incidents of violence. Till four years ago, students, coming from same regions were allotted rooms in the same block.

For instance, students coming from Mehsana and Saurashtra were given rooms in A and B blocks. Similarly, C block was allotted to those from outside the state and D block was kept for students of polytechnic. However, when it was found that the students from particular region and communities started getting into brawls after making their groups, a segregation was done.

Authorities also maintained that around 35 IAS officials have accommodations near the hostel and there is a Public Works department office near to the campus. It was not possible to restrain the movements of vehicles, which made it easy for several unwanted elements to gain access into the campus, they said.

Rivalry spurred case of ragging

VADODARA: A four-member panel probing an alleged case of ragging in M S University's faculty of law has concluded that it was a case of enmity between two groups of students and not a case of ragging. Nisarg Jain, a first-year student of BA LLB (five years integrated law course), had alleged on Friday that a couple of his seniors along with some outsiders were ragging him at the faculty since the last three days.

Jain has alleged that he was asked to propose to girls and get their contact numbers by his seniors. The student has also alleged that his seniors and those from outside the university had also asked him to salute them. In the memorandum that Jain and ABVP leaders submitted to both, the officiating dean of Faculty of Law Rajendra Parikh and MSU vice-chancellor (VC) professor Yogesh Singh, a fifth-year student of BA LLB Imual Parmar was named of allegedly leading a group of students in the ragging case.

Student reports ragging, NID orders probe

The National Institute of Design has formed a seven-member committee to look into a complaint of ragging after an official complaint by a new student. The foundation course student filed a formal written complaint on Friday evening, accusing three second year students of ragging him. The institute had warned senior students about the consequences several days prior to the complaint.

The incident, however, has evoked angry responses from many senior students who accuse the freshman of having over-reacted. Senior students had apparently entered the juniors’ rooms at night and asked them to smoke cigarettes. One senior student brushed aside the incident as “a yearly drama, endemic around each May and June”.

Registrar Vijaya Deshmukh said the administration had received calls and emails from parents of a few new students, and that had kept them on their toes. Deshmukh said forcefully entering the students’ rooms counts as a misdemeanor, and that the senior students ought to have heeded the administration’s earlier warnings.

The institute has, after the incident, barred seniors from entering the junior’s rooms, and security guards have been asked to remain vigilant.

Two of the three accused students are in the Product Design and Exhibition Design courses, and the third has not yet been allotted one, having just passed his foundation course.

The committee will begin investigations from Monday, and a decision is expected to be reached by the end of the week. The three accused students have been suspended. An FIR has not been registered yet.

Seniors thrash first-year medical student in Surat

SURAT: A first-year medical student has alleged that he has been ragged and attacked by his seniors in the wee hours of Saturday. Bhavani Singh has submitted his complaint to the dean of the Government Medical College, Surat. A committee comprising faculty members has been set up to inquire into the incident that took place in the GMC hostel at Majura Gate.

Singh has alleged in his complaint that four seniors had come to his room number 15 in the hostel around 12.30 am and took him downstairs where they thrashed him. However, some other senior students came to his rescue and alerted the college authorities who rushed to the spot.

GMC dean S K Vajpayee said, "The committee will find out whether it was a ragging incident or a fight among the students. So far no police complaint has been registered."

On Friday evening, a few seniors were playing cricket near the old boys' hostel. The ball went to the roof and those playing cricket shouted for Singh, who stays on the top floor, to get the ball. Since he was sleeping he could not go, Singh stated. The seniors attacked him for not following their orders.

They came to his hostel at around 12 midnight. He had asked his friend to lock the room from outside but the seniors found out that Singh was in the room. They broke the lock and took him downstairs and thrashed, Singh alleged.

"Since it was a fight over a cricket issue, it cannot be considered a ragging incident. We have not yet reached any conclusion and the matter is being investigated by the committee," said Vajpayee.

The college authorities also said the issue is between two groups of seniors who are at loggerheads with each other. One group had attacked Singh following which another came out to help him.

Four girl students suspended for ragging in Jamnagar Read more: Four girl students suspended for ragging in Jamnagar

AHMEDABAD: In a first of its kind incident, four girl students of the MP Shah Medical College in Jamnagar were suspended from attending lectures and residing in the college hostel for ragging a first-year student.

The girls were accused of ragging the student and threatening her in order to force her to attend a college party. Dean of the college Dr Vikas Sinha said that four girls, of whom three are second-year students and one is a third-year student, were suspended from the college and will not be allowed to attend lectures for a month. They have also been barred from staying in the hostel. The fifth girl, who is a college pass-out, has been fined Rs 25,000.

"Ragging is a serious issue and we have taken action to nip the issue in the bud to avoid any mental pressure on junior students," said Dr Sinha. Giving details of the case, officials said that a lot of parties are held for college students by members of different communities around this time. Fresher parties are also routinely organized.

The first-year student was asked to come to a party by this group of girls. The girl, who belongs to a village in Surendranagar and is daughter of a village talati, found herself under pressure as her father did not approve of such parties while the girl students said that she will face a difficult time if she did not attend the party. When the girl complained to her father, he approached the anti-ragging helpline. The helpline, in turn, called up the dean's office and gave details of the incident and asked them to take action within a week. "We called a meeting of the anti-ragging committee and found the girls guilty and took action against them," said Dr Sinha. tnn

Surat: Class V student accuses seniors of ragging

Surat, October 6, 2010

A standard V student of a reputed school in Gujarat's Surat district has accused his seniors of ragging.

The victim, Rajiv Mehta (name changed), alleged that the accused students of class IX beat him up and pricked a nail on his private parts. The torture was to such a degree that the victim allegedly fell unconscious.

"I was beaten for two days and on the third day when I went to the bathroom they closed the door from inside and gave me an injection after which I was unconscious," Rajiv said.

His father said, "He was pricked with sharp nails. It was going on for three months. We informed the principal about it many times but no action was taken so were forced to file a police complaint."

Rajiv's parents alleged that instead of taking any action against the accused students the school authorities told them to settle the issue amicably and withdraw the police complaint. But they are now determined about getting the accused punished.

"We don't want any settlement. I want those kids to be rusticated. I want safety for my kids in the school," Rajiv's mother said.

Headlines Today contacted the school authorities to get their version over the incident. However, the principal refused to respond to the queries.

Mystery shrouds BJ college medical student's suicide bid

Dayanand Meitei / DNA/Saturday, June 12, 2010 8:55 IST

Ahmedabad: Was it the ragging in the hostel that prompted the BJ medical college student to want to take her life? Or was it instead, the supposed embarrassment of having been caught stealing, that drove her to slit both her wrists, at her residence at Limbdi on Thursday night?

The reasons behind the second year MBBS student from BJ attempting suicide remain unclear. While the NSUI and the girl's parents cite ragging as the reason, college officials are saying the girl is a kleptomaniac.

When DNA contacted NSUI students, they claimed the institute's version to be completely false. State NSUI vice-president Bhavin Sinh Rathod said, "Our representatives got in touch with the girl and her parents, and found out that the institute wanted to suppress the girl's complaint of ragging against her seniors. They even forced the girl to remain mum and not reveal the matter to anyone. The depression led her to take the extreme step of attempting suicide."

According to reliable sources, the girl's parents, in their testimonial to the police, have stated harassment by the institute as the reason behind their daughter's attempt to kill herself.

As a protest against the institute, NSUI student members carried out a demonstration at the BJ Medical College's main office at around 2 pm on Friday, ransacking the premises and breaking chairs, glasses and computers.

However, officials of the BJ medical college denied any possible ragging. The college's dean Bharat Shah said, "The incident today was triggered by a wrong media report which claimed that the girl attempted suicide because of ragging."

Alleging that the girl suffered from kleptomania, Shah said, "On May 26, around 40 students complained that the girl has been continuously stealing things from the others in the hostel. When the hostel committee searched her room, they found the stolen clothes, mobile phones and ATM cards."

Shah added that following the incident, the girl's parents were summoned to the institute, and they confessed in writing about the stealing. "They volunteered to vacate the hostel themselves, though we didn't ask them to leave", he said, adding, "The incident has nothing to do with ragging at all."

As for the girl, after initial treatment at a local hospital in Limbdi, she was shifted to the Ahmedabad civil hospital.

SVNIT students allegedly ragged in public garden

TNN, 24 January 2010, 10:42pm IST

SURAT: The Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute (SVNIT) authorities on Sunday deliberated for long hours the issue of alleged incident of ragging of 15 students, including four girls, on Saturday evening at Sarojini Naidu public garden in Umra area near the campus.

The college authorities were informed about the incident by a local student, who in turn was alerted by an evening walker. The evening walker said the students were made to do squats, hold their ears and become murga'. The freshers were scared of their seniors and were not cooperating with the authorities in the inquiry, sources said. Even in the past, a few minor incidents of ragging had been reported at the SVNIT.

The SVNIT officials had rushed to the spot and found 30 B.Tech students including freshers and seniors in the garden. The students jumped barricades and fences to escape, yet a few were identified and questioned.

They told the authorities that it was a routine party of students belonging to Andhra Pradesh and rejected the ragging charges. However, the institute authorities were provided photographs and video clip by a few residents and evening walkers. The institute authorities ordered an inquiry by the Institute Level Anti Ragging Committee (ILARC). The freshers have refused to reveal anything till Sunday afternoon and maintained that they were just celebrating a party.

It is a routine affair at the SVNIT in which students of different states organise their separate parties to welcome fresher or to give farewell to seniors. These parties take place soon after the common freshers party. The students are supposed to take permission for organising freshers party outside the campus which they had not taken for the one held on Saturday.

Medical college student alleges ragging

TNN 19 September 2009, 11:03pm

JAMNAGAR: A postgraduate student of MP Shah Medical College has complained to the college authorities that he was ragged brutally. According to the authorities, who refused to disclose the victim's name, the student, with his parents, approached them and complained against a group of senior students who subjected him to inhuman ragging.

The victim enrolled in the college in 2003. His ordeal began when, after MBBS, he got admission in the postgraduate course. He claimed he was regularly thrashed by his tormentors. They used to wake him up by kicking him in his groin and did not let him sleep. When he tried to protest, they threatened to kill him.

Unable to bear the torture, he quit studies and returned to Ahmedabad, his parents said. "The amount of torture my son has gone through can be gauged from the fact that he wakes up suddenly in the night and starts screaming," said the victim's father.

"The allegation of ragging is serious, and considering the Supreme Court's verdict, we've taken serious note of the incident and formed a committee to investigate the matter," said a college official.

Visually impaired student ragged in college

TNN 9 September 2009, 06:15am IST

AHMEDABAD: A visually impaired student of Gujarat College was ragged inside the campus 10 days ago. Ellisbridge police and vice-chancellor of Gujarat University, Parimal Trivedi, has initiated independent investigations into the matter.

"We are taking this matter seriously and an enquiry has been initiated. We have sought clarification from the college," said Trivedi. The incident was kept under wraps and surfaced after some anonymous letters were written by a professor of the college. The college's prinicipal, Piyush Pandya denied the incident but added, "Two visually impaired students do study in the college but I am not aware of any incident of ragging," said Pandya.

A peon of the college rushed to the Ellisbridge police station and complained to a head constable there that trouble was brewing in the college's hostel. The head constable went to the hostel and found that a blind student was being harassed by other students who were also bursting crackers at his feet.

The cops drove away the bullies and restored peace. "The next day Pandya had called me and complained that one of my policemen had caused some trouble inside the college. I spoke to the head constable and he narrated the incident of ragging inside the college. A few days later we got an anonymous letter from an professor of the college. The professor lauded the police's punitive action and that the same set of students often create nuisance inside the college. We have initiated an inquiry on this basis."
