The principal conducted the inquiry after the college received a complaint from the anti-ragging cell helpline on August 14. The incident happened on August 5.

In his complaint, the victim, Mithunlal T V, a first-year BA (criminology) student, said he had gone to the college hostel on August 5 at about 4.30pm to meet his classmates, when he was restrained by Shandas at the entrance. Ragging: NIT suspends four

http://www.deccanchronicle.com/130130/news-current-affairs/article/ragging-nit-suspends-four Kozhikode:

After sitting on the report submitted by an inquiry committee on the ragging that took place on the campus, the director of the National Institute of Technology, Dr M.N.Bandyopadhyay, finally signed the suspension order of four students.

The decision was taken three months after the report was submitted. The director signed the report on January 25, and the very next day Deccan Chronicle carried a story on the unusual lethargy in initiating action.

The delay was unusual on the campus, which is otherwise known for devising strict measures against ragging, said NIT sources. The inquiry committee found that the four students against whom the allegations were levelled had violated Section 6 of the Students Conduct and Disciplinary Code 2007, of the institute. Following the recommendations of the committee, K. Vamsi Mohan and P. Pradeep Kumar have been suspended for two semesters, B. Sai Kiran Rao for one semester and Pannars Hareesh has been given a two-month suspension.

The students are not to enter the hostels or campus during the period. Going by the report, a bunch of first year students were subjected to serial-ragging by second year students in the hostel, on the campus and cricket ground for several days.

Both the victims and the perpetrators were students from Andhra Pradesh. On receiving complaints from first year students, an inquiry committee was formed to look into the issue immediately. Dr P.S. Sathidevi, head of the department of electronics and communication engineering at NIT, headed the seven-member inquiry committee. The committee submitted the report to the director in November, 2012.

Ragging: Cash offered to drop case

http://newindianexpress.com/states/kerala/article589740.ece

When a group of strangers visited them at the Nirmala Hospital late on Thursday night, Noushad and Mehrussna were shocked to hear the price of their daughter’s life. “We will give you 3-4 lakh rupees and you will not pursue a case. Otherwise, it may jeopardize your future,” they said before leaving abruptly. The couple were at the hospital after their daughter Shaniba had been admitted there following a case of alleged ragging in which she was brutally beaten up resulting in serious injuries to her.

The assault took place at JDT Islam IGNOU Community College where she was a first year BCom student. The college authorities later shifted her to Iqraa Hospital which functions under the same management for better care. Noushad says that efforts continued by the perpetrators of the crime to force the family to drop charges but he was determined to fight it out. “There is no way I am settling for anything other than just punishment for those who did this to my daughter,” he says. Five days after the attack, Shaniba is still in serious condition. “She had a kidney condition and undergone a major surgery just two-and-a-half years ago.

It was at the very spot where she underwent a surgery that those boys rammed in a bench repeatedly,” says Noushad. The irony is that it was her desire to study more that led Shaniba to her present condition. She had to stop going to school in her tenth standard because of her condition but was determined to pass the exams. “During my tenth standard, I was able to go to class for just one month. However, with the help of my friends who gave me notes and my teachers who helped me out, I passed SSLC exams with good marks,” said the girl from her hospital bed, mustering up all the energy left in her.

Her condition once again prevented her from being a full-time Plus-1 and Plus-2 student but she joined JDT Islam Community College and passed her final exams with more than 80 per cent marks. It was to the same institution that she went back for her undergraduate studies. “The boys came to rag us and I told them that I was no fresher as I had done my Plus-1 and Plus-2 here. The next time I saw them, I realised they had come to beat me up,” she says.

The college submitted a list of five students who were in the group a day after the incident but Chevayur police say that the students are absconding and cannot be traced. ENS Noushad, a driver by profession, confesses to being not influential enough to exert any political pressure to get the job done. And with each passing day that the accused walk free, one family’s faith in the fairness of the system dies a little.

School students allege ragging, boycott classes

http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2012-07-06/kozhikode/32565303_1_senior-students-boycott-classes-basic-facilities

KANNUR: Plus One students of the Government Model Residential School at Pattuvam in the district boycotted their classes on Friday alleging that the school authorities are not taking action against the senior students who ragged them. The students who threatened to discontinue their studies later toned down their stance following assurance from the police that strict action would be taken against the culprits.

There are 67 Plus One students in the school which is run by the schedule tribe development department, under the chairmanship of the district collector. The students alleged that the seniors started harassing them in the hostel right from the second day after the classes began. They said that the seniors who stay in the first floor of the building would forcibly take them there and harass them. There are 72 Plus Two students in the hostel and a majority of them have been accused of ragging.

On Thursday, the seniors harassed the juniors physically and mentally and even damaged their belongings. Following the incident, the teachers, who stay in the nearby quarters, came and provided them protection. However, fearing that they might be ragged again, the students decided to leave the school on Friday. Though the principal, Radhakrishnan, assured to look into their grievances, the students were adamant in their stand, following which the police intervened.

The principal said 12 students who were involved in ragging have been identified. However, no police complaint has been filed so far. Meanwhile, the students complained that there is no security and basic facilities in the hostel and the building does not even have proper lighting. They also alleged that the manager-cum-resident staff is never present in the hostel. The school was in the news last year too when many students left without informing the authorities because of lack of basic facilities, including water. Though the school gets Rs 2 crore every year, there are allegations that a major portion of the fund is misused and the students are denied basic facilities.

Probe into ragging of college girl begins

KOZHIKODE: The Nadakkavu police have started probing into a complaint lodged by the principal of Government Engineering College, West Hill, on Saturday against eight students of the college for ragging a junior girl student.

The accused eight semester students - Jibin Jose, Ajoofar, Vishnu Raj, Shafi Ummar, P P Sajesh, Arun, Mohammed and Nikhil - have already been suspended from the college. Such a step was taken after a three-member enquiry committee formed by the principal received a complaint from the girl student. The accused have confessed their acts in writing to the committee.

According to college authorities, the eight-member gang have been teasing the fourth semester girl student for months. The situation worsened when the guys poured water on the girl on Valentine's Day, which led the girl from Kollam to attempt suicide.

Later, in a complaint to the principal, the girl threatened to end her life if the college did not conduct enquiry against the eight students. Police officials said that the accused students would be arrested after proper investigation.

Ragging: 4 students from Kollam hospitalised

Four first year students of an engineering college at Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu have been admitted to a private hospital here for trauma and injuries after being allegedly ragged by senior students of the college.

The students, Agnel Andrews, Paulson Joseph, Sachin Julian Francis, and Anoop Wilson, are natives of Pullichira, near here. They are first year civil engineering students of St. Mother Teresa Engineering College. They have lodged a complaint of ragging against the senior students with the Kottiyam police station. The students said the seniors who ragged them were from Kerala. They told The Hindu that they were being ragged since the time they had joined the hostel. In addition to making them do chores, the senior students regularly made them cough up money for charging their mobile phones, they said.

On Sunday night, five of them were kept locked in a room from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. and even beaten at intervals. The seniors, numbering 16 students, told them that they should pay Rs.10,000 the next day.

The five students were let free only after they agreed to pay the money. In the morning, four of them “managed to escape from the hostel” and reach Kollam.

They then informed the college Principal and the warden about the incident, the students said.

They feared going back to the college, the four students said.

The college Principal, when contacted over phone, said he had constituted an inquiry committee soon after the four students had lodged a complaint over telephone. The committee had concluded that prima facie there was a case against the senior students. On the basis of this finding, 11 students had been suspended pending further inquiry.

The Principal said the parents of the four students were meeting him on Wednesday and after they submit written complaints, appropriate follow-up action would be taken

Pariyaram MC closed indefinitely

KANNUR: In the wake of continuing students’ protest and violence in the Pariyaram Cooperative Medical College for the past two days, college authorities on Wednesday decided to close the college indefinitely. The spate of violence started on Tuesday night when students residing in the men’s hostel were allegedly attacked by a group of people.

Inmates of the hostel alleged that a gang of people led by two hospital officials have attacked them over the issue of ragging a second year student. Ten students and two doctors were injured in the attack.Though ADM N T Mathew, Managing Director K Ravi and Principal Radhakrishnan visited the hospital soon after the incident, students protested and blockaded the officials.

On Wednesday, students boycotted classes and staged a blockade in front of the Academy of Medical Sciences Director’s office and Principal’s office.

Anarchy prevails at Researchers Hostel

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Here is an irony. While the inmates of hostels on the Kariavattom campus of Kerala University are on a stir to get their hostel building which are in a poor state to be renovated, another section of knowledge seekers exist on the campus, who wouldn’t mind if a chunk of ceiling fell over them, provided they get a room, which they are deprived of, despite being legally eligible.

They are the group of research scholars, who had applied for rooms, but were denied the facility citing lack of sufficient vacant rooms. They now live in rented houses near the campus, paying exorbitant rents. They blame the former inmates of the hostel, who have not vacated their rooms, even years after completing their PhD, for all the trouble.

The situation has given rise to several undesirable events, including the hostel being turned into a hub of anti-social activities such as substance abuse and ragging. There are as many as 23 rooms in the Researchers’ Hostel, which are occupied by outsiders. While some among them are former inmates, who have completed their PhD, others are ‘total outsiders’. Of the 23 rooms, 13 are occupied by employees working in various government departments. All these things happen because the offenders have the silent support of the authorities and also the hostel committee, says a research scholar on condition of anonymity.

“I was denied a room despite belonging to the reservation category. Following this, I had to rent a house near the campus, which costs me dear owing to the proximity to Technopark,” he added. However, he did not dare to raise voice against this injustice.

Meanwhile, another research scholar, who is an inmate of the hostel and a witness to the activities there, said that complete anarchy prevails at the hostel.

“These illegal occupants invite their friends to the hostel to organise booze parties. They even threaten new inmates and rag them. Even a police case on ragging that was registered just a week ago had to be withdrawn after the hostel committee stopped providing food to the complainant, who hailed from Tamil Nadu,” he said.

He also said that irregularities exist in the allotment of staff quarters too. Several quarters, that are strictly limited to University employees, are now occupied by employees of other departments.

Police firing fuels protests in Kerala

TRIVANDRUM — The police firing on left student activists protesting at alleged illegal admission to a student in the Government Engineering College at Calicut on Monday fuelled protests in the Kerala Assembly and across the state on Tuesday.
While the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led opposition Left Democratic Front stalled the proceedings in the Assembly, activists of the Students Federation of India (SFI) went on a rampage in several places, attacking the police and damaging public properties.

Opposition members trooped into the well of the house shouting slogans against the police and the state government after Speaker G Karthikeyan denied leave for an adjournment motion on the police action against the students. The house was later adjourned for the day.

The opposition continued their protests in the house even after the adjournment. They called off the sit-in after about an hour following the intervention of the speaker.

The adjournment motion was moved by Pradeep Kumar of the CPI (M) demanding a judicial probe into the incident in which Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Radhakrishna Pillai opened fire on protesting SFI activists at Calicut. They also demanded the immediate removal of the police officer. Opposition leader VS Achuthanandan said that the situation at Calicut did not warrant police firing. The police resorted to firing due to the United Democratic Front (UDF) government’s policy to suppress the students’ agitations.

Expressing regret over the police action, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy indicated action against the police officer concerned. However, he questioned the opposition stir against the admission of the student, saying that the student had discontinued his study following ragging by the SFI activists. The SFI attitude that the student will not be allowed to resume his study anywhere in the state was not acceptable to the government. He said several such students were given admission during the LDF rule. Owning responsibility for the admission, the chief minister said that the government would lend all help to Nirmal Madhav if he wanted to continue his study in Kerala.

Meanwhile, the state-wide protests called by the SFI to protest against the police action turned violent in several places. At Kannur, the activists threw stones at the police and stoned the camp office of the inspector-general of police and the residence of the district superintendent of police.

The SFI activists stoned the collectorate at Palghat and pelted policemen with stones in Trichur district. Several media persons were also injured in the clash between the police and the students.

Ragging: SFI demands action against medicos

SFI state secretary P Biju demanded legal actions against the senior students of Thrissur Medical College who ragged a junior student on the other day.
At a press conference here, Biju alleged that a senior police officer had a hidden agenda to save the culprits in the incident.
Biju said that the Public Service Commission had lost its credibility with the appointment of KS Radhakrishnan as chairman. He added that SFI would hold a Rajbhavan march on August 16 demanding the replacement of Radhakrishnan.
He asked the government to make the Agricultural University and Veterinary University a self-dependent one and provide full authority to the Calicut University. He accused that the Calicut University was functioning as a department of the state government.

College authorities ignore ragging complaints

Last Updated : 25 Dec 2010 08:39:50 AM IST

KOCHI: The Model Engineering College, Thrikkakara, has landed in a ragging controversy after an NRI, the father of a firstyear student, appealed to the college authorities to protect his ward who has been subjected to alleged torture in the college hostel by senior students.
In a letter sent to college Principal P Suresh Kumar, the father who refused to reveal his identity fearing for his son's safety, said: "Four months have gone since my ward joined your institution. He was fortunate enough to get an admission in the college hostel.

With agony, surprise and a little bit of anger, let me list before you the mental and physical torture inflicted on my son by a small group of seniors. The seniors started to visit the juniors in their hostel rooms at unearthly hours in not so sober condition. They created situations for slapping the juniors and for stripping them in public. The juniors were ordered to clean the room and the undergarments of the seniors," the letter said.

The letter further further said: "It is learnt that none of the ragging preventive measures is effective neither on your campus or in the hostel.

The complaint box with the name and the telephone numbers of the principal and other respective officials are yet to be arranged. No team of officials or authorities used to take rounds on the hostel premises to check the entry of seniors in the rooms of the juniors. The tollfree antiragging number and notices warning about the consequences of criminal proceedings in case of ragging are not displayed in the college or on hostel premises."

When inquired about the letter, principal Suresh Kumar said that they had received an anonymous letter but the issues raised in the letter were baseless. "We conducted an inquiry and found that no such incidents as mentioned in the letter has happened in the hostel. We have an active antiragging cell in the college which used to ensure that senior students do not get a chance to enter the hostel rooms of the juniors. There have been repeated attempts by a section of the people to tarnish the name of the institution by levelling baseless allegations," the principal added.

Last Updated : 21 Dec 2010 09:58:33 AM IST

KOCHI: Acting tough on ragging, the authorities of Cooperative Medical College (CMC) here on Monday suspended seven students who were allegedly involved in the crime.
The college authorities said that, on Saturday, the senior students physically, sexually and mentally assaulted Joel Antony, a second-year MBBS student under the pretext of ragging.

Anantharaman, Anoop, Thomas, Roshith, Shinas and Anees and Jias are the students who have been suspended, the college authorities said. After the victim lodged a complaint in this regard with the college authorities on Sunday, an inquiry was conducted into the incident.

"It was after the seven students were found guilty by the hostel warden, who conducted an inquiry into the incident, that we decided to suspend them for one month and expel them from the hostel.

As serious charges, including physical, sexual and mental assault, are being levelled against the senior students, we have handed over the complaint to the police," Dr Gireesh, Principal, CMC, said.

Following a row over some issue at the college canteen on Saturday, thirdyear MBBS student Jias pushed Joel into the former's room around 7 p.m. and locked the door from inside, the complaint says.

Then, Jias, along with six of his batchmates, switched off the lights in the room and started assaulting the victim. Joel complained that the students brutally attacked him for almost an hour.

According to the complaint, the senior students showered abuses on Joel maligning his parents. The sexual assault was severe, he said in his compliant.
The college authorities have forwarded the complaint to the Cooperation Minister, the authorities of the Cooperative Academy for Professional Education (CAPE), and the police.

Though, many of the students were involved in such crimes earlier, the authorities had not taken strict action against them. Some of the persons involved in the present case had been under suspension for similar cases earlier, sources said.

The senior students under the pretext of ragging would attack the juniors. Earlier, the first-year students were also attacked in a similar manner by the seniors.
The police have registered a case in this regard.
