Ragging on: Girl forced to drink and smoke

Kolkata, July 17 A first-year girl student of Jadavpur University was allegedly forced by her seniors on Wednesday to consume alcohol and smoke in the name of ragging.
The university authorities have confirmed the incident. They, however, said no written complaint has been registered with them so far.
Registrar Rajat Bandopadhyay said the matter will be considered by the anti-ragging committee of the university. It will be submitted to the vice-chancellor and subsequently to the executive council. A final decision will be taken as per the UGC and Supreme Court guidelines.
“We have received complaints about such an incident from the architecture department. Today the university conducted a meeting of all the heads of the engineering faculties,” said the Pro Vice-Chancellor (academic), Siddhartha Datta.
“We have asked all of them to involve some teachers and students and form a squad and make regular visits so that such incidents do not recur. In each department we have a student-teacher committee. We have asked the heads of departments to involve more students in the committee,” he added.
However, Datta did not elaborate on the issue saying he had no details of what actually happened.
The Federation of Engineering Technology Students Union (FETSU), which represents the students of the engineering faculty, has also confirmed the incident
