2nd day into session, DU gets ragging complaint

New Delhi, July 18 Second day into Session 2008-09, Delhi University received its first official complaint of ragging on Thursday night. The report came from Raj Kumari Amrit Kaur College of Nursing, Lajpat Nagar.
According to reports, two BSc (Hons) Nursing students were allegedly harassed in the women’s college’s hostel.
Deputy dean of the college Dinesh C Varshney said he got a call at 10.55 pm Thursday from one of the victims’ father. “He sought our help,” Varshney said.
Varshney immediately rang up the college but with no one taking the call, he reached the institution along with other officials to examine the complaint.
“We went to their (hostel) room and talked to the victim,” Varshney said. “They were in tears — they said a few seniors had harassed them.” The girls also told the deputy dean that barring a few, each fresher had undergone some form of ragging.
The seniors who had allegedly ragged the freshers had fled by then, officials said.
College authorities, however, refused to divulge much — they refused to part with identity of either the victims or the accused.
Principal in-charge Dr Kalpana Mandal told Newsline that the college is looking into the complaint: “Strict action will be taken as per Delhi University guidelines against anyone found guilty.”
According to officials, a detailed written report was given to university Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental on Friday morning. College authorities refused to comment whether a police complaint has been lodged.
According to officials, the college has now formed a management committee to investigate the matter.
