Student faints during ragging

ALLAHABAD: Ragging continues unchecked despite directives of the Supreme Court. A student of a private engineering college become the latest victim of harrasment and physical torture at the hands of his seniors.

The victim, Bindesh Tiwari, hailing from a village in Janghai block in Jaunpur had taken admission in the college in the 2009-10 session. He was staying at the hostel.

On Tuesday evening, a group of seniors reportedly came to his room and started taking his `introduction' even as they started searching his belongings. In between the `introduction', the seniors started taunting him about his family members, leaving Bindesh distressed. Even as they continued tormenting him, one of them asked him to present a dance item.

It was at this point of time that Bindesh slumped on the floor and fell unconsicious. In the meantime, someone informed the warden and proctor who arrived on the scene and took the student to a hospital from where he was discharged after treatment. The authorities of the institute also infomed the family members of the student who also arrived to take care of Bindesh.

Reacting to the incident, his brother demanded an inquiry into the incident and strict punishment for the seniors involved in it. The family took away Bindesh back home.

The director of the institute said that arrangemnts have been made to ensure that juniors are not harrassed by seniors. On the issue of Bindesh, he said that the youth boy had a history of epilepsy and during the course of interaction with the seniors he suffered an attack. The authorities are questioning the senior students. After a preliminary inquiry, action would be taken against them if found guilty.
