Guwahati police arrested four students from a private hostel today for allegedly ragging a newcomer.
According to police, the accused — Akash Agarwal, 20, Amit Maheswari, 23, Vivek Goel, 27, and Rohit Agarwal, 21, — were arrested from their hostel on bylane 4 at Gandhibasti today on charges of torturing 17-year-old Rajiv Sharma, both physically and mentally.
“According to a complaint lodged by Sharma’s family at Chandmari police station this morning, the accused were harassing Rajiv since September 4,” a police source said. Sharma was “manhandled” resulting in mental agony, he added.
The police said the four accused were from different colleges but did not disclose the names of the institutions.
They also refused to divulge if Sharma had been sent for medical examination. A higher secondary first year student of Icon Academy, Sharma hails from Barpathar in Golaghat district.
