TIRUPUR: The Chikkanna Government Arts College was closed indefinitely on Thursday following clashes between two groups of students over ragging.
According to college sources, two days ago a first-year student, who stayed in the hostel, was rescued by a group of hostel inmates, when some senior day scholars ragged him. This led to a clash between the day scholars and the hostel inmates.
On Wednesday, a group of hostel inmates entered a bus and assaulted some day scholars. The same day, the college management dismissed a final-year student for ragging and clash.
Irked over this, a group of day scholars entered the hostel on the college premises on Thursday morning and attacked the hosteliers with wooden logs and stones. They also destroyed the doors and windows of the hostel. To control the situation, the college authorities called in the police.
Five students were injured in the clash and they were shifted to a hospital.
Meanwhile, about hundred students broke into a hostel, which is run by the Backward and Most Backward Classes Welfare Department, outside the college campus and attacked the inmates. They not only damaged the hostel property including television, water heater and books but also burnt a two-wheeler and smashed into pieces a bicycle.
By the time police reached the hostel the attackers had fled the spot. In order to prevent further clash, the college administration declared indefinite holiday for the institution.
Tirupur north police have registered a case and launched a search for the students who attacked the hostel.
