‘Ragging’ at JU

A first-year BPharm student at Jadavpur University has accused his seniors of ragging him at the university’s main hostel off Prince Anwar Shah Road, the dean of student affairs said on Wednesday.

According to the complaint, he was assaulted on the roof of the hostel for an hour.

“Ritesh Kumar came to my office but I was not there. My office staff sent him to the director of youth and welfare, Bappaditya Mallick,” dean Rajat Ray said in the evening.

“I have heard that he had lodged a verbal complaint with Mallick. The university authorities are trying to find out what had happened at the hostel,” added Ray.

Ritesh is from Ara in Bhojpur district of Bihar.

Director of youth and welfare Mallick was not available for comment.

Kumar is likely to lodge a written complaint on Thursday, said a source.
