Student injured in ragging in Uttar Pradesh college

Lucknow, April 24 (IANS) An engineering student in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad district suffered multiple injuries after he was allegedly ragged by his seniors, police said Saturday.

According to police, Manjeet Singh, a first year student, was taken to hospital after three seniors assaulted him with a blunt object Saturday afternoon.

“The student is out of danger. He has alleged that three seniors started beating him when he refused to obey their orders of introducing himself to a group of seniors,” Sub Inspector S.P. Chaudhary told reporters.

Moradabad is 350 km from Lucknow. “A case has been registered against the three seniors,” he added.

The victim also accused the college’s private guards of not intervening. College Proctor B.K. Singh told reporters: “We are yet to ascertain whether it is a case of ragging. We have initiated an enquiry.”

PGIMER doctor found dead, family cries foul

Chandigarh, Apr 19 (PTI) A resident doctor of the prestigious PGIMER here was found dead in his hostel compound under mysterious circumstances today with his parents alleging that he died due to ragging.

The body of 25-year old Nagedra AV hailing from Bangalore was found in the compound of the hostel in which he was residing, police said.

Nagendra had joined the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research here about two months back and was working with blood transfusion medicine deparmtment of the institute.

Though police suspect it to be a case of suicide, the parents of the doctor alleged that their son died due to ragging.

A Reddy, father of the deceased, alleged that only yesterday he had received a call from his son that he was finding it difficult to continue in the institute due to ragging.

Assault charge: Case against two students

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a suspected case of ragging, the Medical College Police have registered a case against two B Pharm students of the Medical College on charges of assaulting an MBBS student at the college men’s hostel here.

Sadhik Ameen of Palakkad and Fuwad Harris of Vadakara, both second year BPharm students, are alleged to have assaulted Vijith Vijay, a first-year MBBS student of the college, hailing from Kottarakkara. Both the students have been suspended from the college. The incident is reported to have taken place on Monday evening when Sadhik and Fuwad barged into Vijith’s room and assaulted him.

Vijith had moved into the hostel on March 28 after he had vacated his room at Pattom where he was staying.

According to sources, Sadhik and Fuwad had a poor disciplinary track record at the college. They had received warnings several times before for violating rules. Two of their friends were suspended from the college earlier on charges of indiscipline.

Hostel warden Sreenath told `Express’ that the two had violated the rule which forbade senior students from entering the hostel block of junior students. The incident was reported to the police immediately and the two were suspended. An inquiry commission was formed by college principal Dr Ramdas Pisharody to probe into the issue.

Medical College SI Ramraj, who is probing the case, said that the police had registered a case only on charges of physical assault.

The issue of ragging can be confirmed only after receiving the principal’s report. Sadhik and Fuwad are absconding, Ramraj said.

Student hangs himself allegedly after ragging

CHENNAI: Sinmoi Debroy (21), hailing from Guwahati, Assam, an engineering college student, hanged himself to death, following the alleged ragging by his seniors.

According to the police, Debroy, a first-year student in a private engineering college at Sholinganallur, was staying in a hostel at Padhur in Kelambakkam, where students from other colleges also stayed. On Sunday, he went out for lunch and after returning to his room he locked the door. At night, a few of his batch mates knocked on his door to call him out for dinner but he did not respond. When they looked through the window, they were shocked to see him hanging from a fan.

The Kelambakkam police recovered Sinmoi’s body and sent it to the Chengalpattu hospital for post-mortem. On checking Sinmoi’s mobile phone, they found that it contained 42 messages, most of them allegedly abusive and threatening in nature.

Initial investigations revealed that he was threatened by his seniors who demanded money from him. Police suspect that the alleged ragging forced the boy to take the extreme step.

Ragging case: MSF condemns varsity order

KOZHIKODE: The Muslim Students Federation (MSF) has condemned the order of Calicut University annulling the dismissal of a Students Federation of India (SFI) activist from Government Law College for his alleged involvement in a case of ragging a first-year student of the college.

The MSF leaders addressed a press conference along with the victim of the incident, Mohammed Salif, here on Thursday.

MSF State president P.K. Feroze and Mr. Salif claimed that the SFI leader was dismissed following a unanimous decision taken by the college staff council and the PTA. How could the university annul the order, they asked.

Report flayed

The MSF leaders rejected a report on the incident prepared by a member of the university Syndicate stating that he “did not take statements from even those students who were ready to depose and that the report was clearly meant to protect the SFI leader.” They said the MSF would approach the State Human Rights Commission and launch an agitation against the police for not arresting the SFI leader though a petition had been lodged against him at the Chevayur police station in connection with the incident.

Ragged by seniors, engineering student attempts suicide

Nashik, Mar 31 (PTI) Upset due to alleged ragging by hostel seniors, an engineering student here attempted suicide by slitting his wrist veins, police said today.

Praveen Ananda Pawar, a student of B.Tech at K K Wagh engineering college here was rushed to hospital where his condition is stated to be out of danger, they said.

Police have registered an offence against three students and two professors in this connection, they said. The names of professors booked along with hostelers were not revealed.

Praveen had earlier complained about the ragging to two professors but they did not take any action. His seniors continued to harass him, following which he slit his wrist with a blade last night, police said.

Three of his seniors Gokul Shinde, Hrishikesh Harade and Balu were booked under the relevant sections, police said.

Engg student ends life

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A first-year Civil Engineering student of the Sarabhai Institute of Science and Technology, Vellanad, committed suicide on Monday night allegedly due to ragging. Ajub Ajith, 19, was found hanging at his house at Kowdiar here around 8.30 p.m.

A complaint against ragging, written by some of his girl classmates to the vice-principal of the college, was found from the body.

His parents filed a complaint with the Museum police alleging ragging by some of his seniors. According to the police, Ajub told his mother that one of his friends had been ragged and he was their next target.''His mother said she would complain to the principal. But Ajub opposed it saying that it would do more harm to him. He went to sleep after 8 p.m. He was later found hanging,’’ the police said.

However, the college authorities denied the ragging charge. ''No complaint against ragging came up before me. The complaint letter found from Ajub’s body didn’t mention any such incident,’’ said college principal M.K.Jana. Vice-principal M.K.Narendranathan said that the college had taken strict measures against ragging in the past.

``We register case with the police if we get any complaint. Even, last week, we suspended five 4th semester students, including son of a police officer, on ragging charges. As per our knowledge, there was no incident of ragging against Ajub,’’ he said.

One of the seniors in the college said that there were complaints against some 4th semester students on ragging. However, he was clueless about any incident of ragging against Ajub. ``The complaint which was found on his body is actually an old one. The complaint does not have any mention of ragging against him,’’ he said.

Incidents of ragging were reported from the Sarabhai Institute in the past.

Two ragging cases were registered with the Venjarammoodu police station against some of the senior students of the institute.
