KOLLAM: The academic future of 10 engineering students who had gone to study in an engineering college Tamil Nadu now remain uncertain as they have decided to come back unable to endure the ragging by senior students.

Following complaints from these students, four students, including two Malayalis, studying in the PSNN Engineering College in Tirunelveli district were arrested in connection with a ragging case last month. The victims now say they do not want to go back as they fear their seniors will harass them again. "The ragging started right from the first day of our joining the college.

Gradually, it worsened and they started torturing us physically," one of the victims complained to the principal. Initially, four first year mechanical engineering students — Muhammad Azar (18), Muneer (19), Althaf(18) and Kamalraj (18) — were subjected to ragging. "College authorities suspended six senior students and imposed a fine on them.

This infuriated the other senior students and they even blocked our access to food and did not allow us to sleep peacefully," a victim said. Muhammed Azer was assaulted by some senior students on January 19 when he went to the hostel room with his relatives to shift his belongings to an accommodation outside the hostel.

"The junior students were often compelled to dance naked, forced to take measurement of the room with a match stick and tortured using cigarette butts," Mashoor Koya, Muhammad Azar's father said.

CHENNAI: Five students of SRM University were brutally attacked by at least 30 seniors in two separate incidents for allegedly resisting ragging. The management, however, mentioned only one attack and claimed it was "not ragging".

The victims alleged that the management failed to act and the police, too, didn't register a case saying the seniors had tendered an apology. On January 19, Gautam Mahto, Krishna and Akhil were near an eatery in Adyar, when 20-25 students surrounded them and attacked them with sickles, knives and iron rods.

On January 24, Shashin Ram, Sai Nitin and Gautam were attacked by another group. Shashin Ram's right arm was fractured, and 10 stitches were needed to close the cuts on his head. Akhil was admitted to SRM hospital with 13 stitches, Krishna's nose ridge was broken and Sai Nitin had internal injuries, they said. Gautam said, "Seniors ragged me for several days.

When I refused to give in, they attacked me." SRM University registrar N Sethuraman said, "There was only one incident and it is not ragging. We didn't act as we didn't want enmity among students. The victims told us they had no complaints." Kancheepuram SP Xavier Dhanraj said, "I sent two officers to try and make the victims lodge a complaint. But they were not willing."

Ragging: NIT suspends four

http://www.deccanchronicle.com/130130/news-current-affairs/article/ragging-nit-suspends-four Kozhikode:

After sitting on the report submitted by an inquiry committee on the ragging that took place on the campus, the director of the National Institute of Technology, Dr M.N.Bandyopadhyay, finally signed the suspension order of four students.

The decision was taken three months after the report was submitted. The director signed the report on January 25, and the very next day Deccan Chronicle carried a story on the unusual lethargy in initiating action.

The delay was unusual on the campus, which is otherwise known for devising strict measures against ragging, said NIT sources. The inquiry committee found that the four students against whom the allegations were levelled had violated Section 6 of the Students Conduct and Disciplinary Code 2007, of the institute. Following the recommendations of the committee, K. Vamsi Mohan and P. Pradeep Kumar have been suspended for two semesters, B. Sai Kiran Rao for one semester and Pannars Hareesh has been given a two-month suspension.

The students are not to enter the hostels or campus during the period. Going by the report, a bunch of first year students were subjected to serial-ragging by second year students in the hostel, on the campus and cricket ground for several days.

Both the victims and the perpetrators were students from Andhra Pradesh. On receiving complaints from first year students, an inquiry committee was formed to look into the issue immediately. Dr P.S. Sathidevi, head of the department of electronics and communication engineering at NIT, headed the seven-member inquiry committee. The committee submitted the report to the director in November, 2012.

Engineering student commits suicide, father alleges ragging

COIMBATORE: A first year computer science student of a college here committed suicide on Thursday. Her father told the media that she had complained the previous night that a section of students had harassed her outside the campus.

Police has registered a case and will hold an inquiry in the college on Friday. Revathy Subasini, a student with Kongunadu Arts and Science College, was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her house at Balaji Nagar in Rakipalayam at 10.30am. Her father, Jayaraj, who met reporters outside the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital where the body was brought for post-mortem, said she has been studying in the college for the past one year and had never complained of any problems at the college.

However, on Wednesday, she returned home early and insisted that she wanted to shift to another college. When asked why she broke down and said a group of college students harassed her while riding home on her bike. She did not mention any student in particular or their class or subject, he said. It has been only three weeks since Revathy started travelling to college on her new bike.

No one at home insisted that she went to college as they knew she was still upset. "She hanged herself after I went out for work and her mother, Geeta, went out to a nearby shop. When Geeta returned, she found her hanging from the fan," Jayaraj said. Periyanaickenpalayam police has registered a case under section 174 (unnatural death) of CrPC. Despite repeated attempts, college authorities were unavailable for comment.

Association of University Teachers condemned the incident and demanded stringent implementation of rules and regulations to curb ragging inside and outside education institutions. C Pichandi, general secretary, AUT, said a few students were previously fined by the district court for ragging in the campus and it is unfortunate that ragging has led to the death of a student. Police will invoke the anti-ragging act if the inquiry on Friday confirms Revathy's father's version. The act has stringent provisions to deal with ragging.

The boy was admitted to the hospital with burns on his right ear and neck A Keralite student studying business management at an institute in Karnataka was on Sunday admitted to the district hospital, Mananthavadi, with serious burns after an incident of alleged ragging. Muhammed Rafi, 19, son of Ashraf of Nechana at Vellamunda, was admitted to the hospital with burns on his right ear and neck.

Muhammed is a first-year BBA student at the Sri Siddhartha Institute of Business Management at Maralur, near Tumkur. The boy’s relatives alleged that a few senior students manhandled him on Saturday for failing to attend a function organised by them. They said the boy was assaulted by a Malayali final-year BBA student of the college along with some outsiders.

The Mananthavadi police reported the incident to the Tumkur police station following a complaint registered by his parents. FRIENDS’ VERSION Tumkur Staff Correspondent reports: Two of Muhammed’s friends at the college, who requested anonymity, said Akhilesh, a 6th semester BBM student in the same college, along with his friend Rajin Lal, had come to Muhammed’s house in Amarajyothi Nagar in Tumkur city on Saturday.

They said Akhilesh, who had opened a centre, smartindia.in, in Tumkur, was angry that Muhammed did not attend the inauguration on January 18. Akhilesh came to Muhammed’s house on Saturday. Following an argument, Akhilesh slapped him, and Rajin caught hold of his neck. When Muhammed tried to escape he fell on a vessel in which water was being boiled on the stove, his friends said. Akhilesh immediately took Muhammed to a hospital where he was treated.

Since Muhammed was scared after the incident, his friends told him to go home, and he left on Saturday evening. Akhilesh and Rajin are from Kozhikode in Kerala. Rajin is doing a diploma course in Shridevi College in Tumkur. NO COMPLAINT Ravikumar N.S., Principal of Sri Siddhartha Institute of Business Management, expressed doubts whether Muhammed had been ragged.
