Lucknow, Nov 26 (IANS) A first year engineering student of a government-run polytechnic here was allegedly assaulted by a group of senior students on the institute's campus after he refused to bow his head before them, police said Friday.
Navneet Gaur, the student of Hewett Polytechnic, was Thursday evening roughed up by around 10 of his seniors for not following their directions.
Gaur, who after the incident preferred leaving his hostel room on the campus, went to his relatives in Gomti Nagar area here. They helped him file a ragging complaint with the police against the senior students.
'The student said the seniors who had their faces covered intercepted him when he was going to his hostel room. They then directed him to bow before them and proceed towards the hostel in the same position,' police inspector D.P. Singh told reporters.
'As Gaur objected, the seniors started punching and kicking him. They even crushed his spectacles and threatened him with dire consequences if he told the institute's authorities about the incident,' he added.
According to the police, Gaur has identified two of the seniors by their voice and physical appearance.
'He is not able to tell their names. He identifies them by their faces. According to him, both the students are in second year of engineering and assaulted him with their other batchmates,' Singh said.
'We have initiated an enquiry into the matter along with the institute's officials. Stern action will be taken against all those who assaulted Gaur,' he added.
