It was assault not ragging, admits Rau dental college student

Indore: The alleged incident of ragging in the Rau-based College of Dental Science (CDS), which recently hit headlines, was a case of assault, the victim has admitted.

The new revelation comes after CDS produced documents relating to the case before the proctorial board of the Devi Ahilya University (DAU) on Thursday.

Kapil Soni, a BDS final year student at CDS, had levelled ragging allegations against seniors Pankaj and Piyush Gillore, saying the duo had beaten him up with an iron rod on March 18.

Soni has, however, withdrawn his statement now admitting that Pankaj and Piyush had thrashed him over a dispute and the episode did not constitute ragging.

Both the accused have also given a statement, saying they had assaulted Soni and not ragged him.

Taking cognizance of the incident, CDS has suspended Pankaj and Piyush for a year, a decision that has been upheld by the DAU.

Speaking to Dainik Bhaskar, Dean of student welfare, DAU, Dr. Rajeev Dixit said, "All investigations and the statement of the victim [Soni] have proved beyond doubt that the episode was one of assault and not ragging. Taking appropriate action CDS has suspended the accused students."
