Probe into ragging of college girl begins

KOZHIKODE: The Nadakkavu police have started probing into a complaint lodged by the principal of Government Engineering College, West Hill, on Saturday against eight students of the college for ragging a junior girl student.

The accused eight semester students - Jibin Jose, Ajoofar, Vishnu Raj, Shafi Ummar, P P Sajesh, Arun, Mohammed and Nikhil - have already been suspended from the college. Such a step was taken after a three-member enquiry committee formed by the principal received a complaint from the girl student. The accused have confessed their acts in writing to the committee.

According to college authorities, the eight-member gang have been teasing the fourth semester girl student for months. The situation worsened when the guys poured water on the girl on Valentine's Day, which led the girl from Kollam to attempt suicide.

Later, in a complaint to the principal, the girl threatened to end her life if the college did not conduct enquiry against the eight students. Police officials said that the accused students would be arrested after proper investigation.
