Tension gripp-ed the Government Arts College located in Rasipuram near here on Thursday for several hours after a gang of outsiders allegedly thrashed a few students for allegedly ragging some juniors. Sources said that the trouble started after a group of outsiders, including the brother of a junior student, stormed into the college and picked up a quarrel with some students questioning as to why juniors were harassed. Suddenly the gang began thrashing a few senior students.

As the situation was going out of control, college authorities informed the police, following which a team from Rasipuram police station rushed to the campus and held inquiries. “We have been holding inquiries with both sides and proper action will be taken after ascertaining the facts,” said, T Thamaraiselvan, Inspector of Rasipuram police station. Meanwhile, the college authorities denied any ragging issue behind the quarrel.

DURGAPUR: First-year and final-year students of Bengal College of Engineering and Technology in Durgapur clashed at the college hostel late on Wednesday after the first-year students accused their seniors of ragging. Ten students have been arrested for rioting on campus, based on complaints at New Town police by the college authorities.

No arrests have been made in connection with ragging. Ten students have also been injured in the violence, six of whom have been hospitalized, said police. According to police, the clash was reported at 8.15pm on Wednesday. "There was load shedding in the hostel in Durgapur's Bidhan Nagar area around 8pm. All students stay in this hostel.

Minutes later, the first-year students alleged that they were being ill-treated and ragged by the seniors for the past several days. This triggered a clash between the two groups and several students were injured," said a police officer. The situation was brought under control after ACP Sylvamurugan reached the spot with a large police force.

A police picket has been posted on the campus to prevent further clash. The six students who are undergoing treatment at a private hospital have been identified as Udit Narayan Jena, Sumit Ghatak, Sourav Chakraborty, Anand Mohan, Pawan Kumar Das and Kumar Abhinav.

All of them are students of the first semester of computer science. Following the clash, college authorities lodged two separate FIRs. While the first case pertains to rioting on campus in which arrests have been made, the other complaint — which deals with ragging — has been lodged against unknown people.

Of the 10 students held, eight are from first year and the remaining from the final year. Asansol police commissioner Vineet Goel confirmed the arrests. "We are probing the case further as there are serious allegations of ragging,'' said Goel. Institute director S B Ganguly said the case was being probed internally.

"Our anti-ragging committee is also looking into the case. The police have been provided all help. We will take action against erring students once we receive both reports and the allegations are proven. Ragging will not be tolerated in our institute,'' he said.

Six NIIFT students arrested for ragging, one on run; institute says it was fighting

Following a complaint of ragging, the Mohali police on Thursday night arrested six of the seven accused students of Northern Indian Institute of Fashion Technology (NIIFT). The seventh accused, Sahil Vashisht from Ludhiana, is still on the run. As the offences under which they were booked are bailable, the six students were released on bail on Friday.

The accused have been identified as Sehajvir Singh from Mohali; Shehbaaj Khan from Sangrur; Sahil Vashisht from Ludhiana; and Mritunjay, Khusnoor, Raj Kumar and Krishna Singh from Patna. All seven were booked for voluntarily causing hurt, wrongful restraint, criminal intimidation, assault to dishonour, rioting and unlawful assembly.

Six of the accused have completed their diploma and are currently pursuing a 'bridge course' at NIIFT to obtain a degree while Krishna is a second-year student. The FIR was registered following a complaint by the victims who were allegedly ragged and beaten up by the accused. According to the police, the victims — Amresh Mehta from Noida, Shikhar Srivastava from Lucknow and Satyam from Patna — are first-year students who were being harassed by the accused for several days.

The accused allegedly asked the victims to remove their clothes and dance publicly in the college canteen around 2 pm on Thursday. When the victims refused to do so, they were allegedly beaten up by the accused causing them injuries. While Satyam got stitches in his ear and Amresh suffered minor injuries, Shikhar was injured while trying to save the two.

The victims alleged they were being constantly harassed and ragged by the accused for the last several days. The victims said that the actual number of seniors was around 10-12 and they used metallic knuckles while beating the juniors. "These seniors have been ragging people for the last three-four years but have never been booked because the college administration tries to suppress such cases.

Even this time, the incident happened right in front of the entire college, including teachers, but the head of the college maintains that it was just a case of fighting among students and not ragging," alleged the victims. The victims also alleged that the college authorities were trying to threaten them not to register a case or they would be expelled. However, Madan Lal, the assistant registrar of the Institute, denied these allegations.

"We do not suppress such cases but rather try to sort them out because we don't want our students to be branded as criminals. It's common for students at this age to fight among themselves, and that's what happened yesterday. It was not ragging," he said.

This was reiterated in a press release wherein Vishva Bandhu, the director of NIIFT, said that an investigation into the incident by a four-member anti-ragging committee revealed that it was not a case of ragging but of fighting between two groups of students. He added that the authorities would look into the matter involving both the groups and take necessary action against them. However, other students of the institute said the accused allegedly often called their juniors to their flat and ragged them severely. "They make their juniors remove their clothes and dance in a vulgar way among several other things," said a third-year student.

SP Abhishek Goyal said, “The boy approached us stating that he is under pressure from the principal to withdraw the case. We have asked the Sullia police to look into this aspect.” Denying the allegation, college principal Ganesh N R said, “When the incident was brought to my notice, I immediately directed the student to file a complaint.

I have suspended five students who were involved in the incident. A 12-member committee has been formed to keep a check on ragging activities. Every day, two members from the committee will conduct inspections. Security at the hostel during the night has been increased, since the incident was reported after the 10.30 pm deadline.” Sullia police on Wednesday filed a case against five students in connection with the ragging incident.

The victim identified as Prithvin, a resident of Mysore, alleged that five students had come to his hostel room at around 11pm on Tuesday and asked him to fetch drinking water to their room. When he refused, they allegedly slapped him hard on his face, causing him a wound on his lip.

Police have booked cases under sections 143, 147, 325 read with 149 under the Karnataka Education Act of 1983 against five boys. Darshan, Krithik, and Bhavan who were arrested late evening on Wednesday were produced before the magistrate and have been remanded in judicial custody. Sachin and Kaushik are absconding.

She topped in almost every course she took up. After securing good marks in standard X, she was selected as a trainee in turner trade at BOSCH.

She had also earned a gold medal in an exam conducted by the Computer Society of India. She had bagged a first prize at Bengaluru in June, at a national competition where she had represented her company. She was also selected for a training course in Germany on the basis of her intelligence, skills and sincerity. Her father also said that his daughter had mentioned that her colleagues were harassing and teasing her.

The girls and boys often taunted her and passed remarks, her father said, adding that he had also asked her to talk to her seniors without losing her focus at work. He had also spoken to her colleagues and requested them not to tease her, but that did not help. She had taken leave on Wednesday and Thursday as she was not well. But when she returned to work on Friday, the girls made fun of her with connotative comments. She was visibly depressed while going to work on Saturday, the day before she ended her life.

SIRSA: Alleging ragging by seniors, 37 Class X students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), Odhan in the district, moved out of their hostels on Monday night. As they staged a protest, alleging that they were ragged by students of Class XII, police have reached the school and begun a probe.

Taking action against the erring students, the school principal suspended nine students for 15 days from both classes. The Class X students alleged that their seniors from class XII called them to their rooms and tortured them.  A 17-year-old college student in Lucknow is fighting for her life in hospital after she fell from the third floor of a building on campus. Sumbul Ishaq's family alleges that she was either pushed by senior students, or fell down after she was cornered by a group that was ragging her on Tuesday. She has multiple fractures and her jaw has been hurt so badly that she cannot speak.

A police team visited the private college today to gather more information and to question the principal about her family's accusations. Her father, Abu Ishaq, has told the police that Sumbul had complained recently about being harassed by other students both on the bus she took to college and on campus. He says his complaints to the college management were ignored.

He also says a teacher humiliated her for not being fluent in English. The police will have to wait till Sumbul is better before it can ask her to help identify those who were allegedly her tormentors. College officials say her cellphone was found after her accident and has been given to the police, which says it will see if records of text messages or calls furnish clues about her ordeal.

Dr L Shekhar, a senior management official, told NDTV, "No complaint of any ragging or harassment of girl was ever brought to the notice of the management by the girl's guardians. When the incident took place, the girl was rushed to the hospital by four teachers and one student. The college is cooperating with the police in its investigations."

INDORE: The anti-ragging committee of the Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV) has found that the ragging incident at JC Bose Hostel could have been averted had the chief warden and warden dealt with the issue strictly. Yadav had reported the matter to the chief warden and also lodged a police complaint against the accused. The matter is pending in the court and students allegedly abused Yadav after the court hearing on August 30.

Five law students booked for ragging

COIMBATORE: Five senior students from Government Law College, Coimbatore, have been booked for ragging a junior. The victim was forced to salute the senior students. Three of the victim's friends were also assaulted when they intervened. E Annamalai (19), a native of Thoothukudi, is a second year student of the law college.

He was standing in front of the main entrance gate of the college on Thursday when two senior students, Jayaram (fourth year) and Suresh (fifth year) started ragging him. The duo told Annamalai to salute them. Annamalai's friends, Abdul Rahman (fourth year) from Gandhipuram, Ramesh Pandian (fourth year) from Theni, Prabhakaran (fifth year) from Muthukulathur in Ramanathapuram district, Sathish ( fifth year) from Theni and Thavamani Selvam (second year) from Madurai intervened and asked the seniors to leave Annamalai alone.

However, Jayaram and Suresh refused to back off and, instead, invited three friends to join them in ragging Annamalai. 15 Silchar NIT students to face action for ragging

http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2013-08-30/guwahati/41617604_1_nit-silchar-n-v-deshpande-four-students

SILCHAR: Fifteen students of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Silchar, all belonging to the 5th semester, will face punishment for their involvement in ragging inside the institute.

Informing this to TOI, NIT Silchar director N V Deshpande on Thursday said the punishment to be meted out will be exemplary and justifiably harsh to act as a deterrent against recurrence of such incidents. While 4 out of 15 accused students will be suspended, the rest would have to pay a fine of Rs 5,000 each and will be disqualified from appearing in campus selection tests.

The decision to take action against the erring students has been taken at a high-level meeting held at NIT near here on Thursday afternoon. Although Deshpande stopped short of spelling out the nature of punishment to be meted out to the erring students, sources said while four students will face suspension from this institute of national importance, others will be asked to leave the NIT hostel.

Over the last one week, at least 50 3rd semester students of the institute were ragged by their seniors - all belonging to the 5th semester - in the hostel. However, this came to light only after the victims wrote to the joint secretary to the ministry of human resource development and technical director of all NITs, New Delhi, without informing this to the director of NIT, Silchar or other local authorities. This created a flutter in the institute and Deshpande was swift in taking action against the accused.

Law student suspended for ragging

KOCHI: A student of Government Law College, Ernakulam, was suspended for ragging his junior after the latter refused to pay him Rs 50 for entering the college boys' hostel. The inquiry conducted by the college principal found that the senior student, Shandas, guilty of ragging.

"Restraining a student from entering a place that he is lawfully entitled to, asking him to wait at a place he is not interested, asking him to do something he does not like, using abusive words causing embarrassment to him undoubtedly and squarely fall within the definition of ragging under the Kerala Prohibition of Ragging Act," the inquiry report stated.

"As it is a prima facie case of ragging, we have suspended the student as per the ragging act and forwarded the complaint to police for further action," said principal (in charge) V R Jayadevan. The principal conducted the inquiry after the college received a complaint from the anti-ragging cell helpline on August 14. The incident happened on August 5.

In his complaint, the victim, Mithunlal T V, a first-year BA (criminology) student, said he had gone to the college hostel on August 5 at about 4.30pm to meet his classmates, when he was restrained by Shandas at the entrance. Shandas demanded Rs 50 from him and verbally abused him when he refused to pay.

The victim further stated in the complaint that Shandas had dragged him pulling his collar and forcefully pushed him out of the hostel, while stating that "those belonging to his community are expected to sit only on the floor". Later, the accused barged into the victim's room in the post-metric hostel, Ernakulam, and threatened to finish him due to which the victim alleged in his complaint that "he is mentally tormented and afraid to come to the college and attend classes".

However, police are yet to register a case under the ragging act. "We have not received the report from the college. We just know that the student has been suspended by the college. Once we get the report, we will look into it," assistant commissioner (Kochi city) D S Sunesh Babu said.Based on a complaint submitted by the victim on August 7, the police had on the same day registered a case against Shandas under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Students flee after ragging ‘demo’

http://www.telegraphindia.com/1130827/jsp/frontpage/story_17276701.jsp#.Ui8v_Mb7CK8

Silchar, Aug. 26: A ragging “demonstration” made 19 Class IX students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Monacharra, flee from the school early today before being caught 7km away and herded back to face suspension. Monacharra, in Hailakandi district of south Assam, is about 50km from this town.

The 19 boys managed to flee from the school premises around 1am today but the school administration sprang into action as soon as it got wind of their escapade and managed to catch them near Lala town, 7km from the school. Sources said the students had decided to flee after two boys — Class IX student Mustafa Ahmed Barbhuiya and Khalid Bin Saha Alam of Class VIII — were allegedly beaten up by a group of Class XII students near the student lavatory in the school’s backyard around noon yesterday.

A Class IX student said, “We were called over by a group of Class XII students and made to witness the ragging taking place near the school toilet. They threatened us and said we were witnessing just a ‘demo’ and that they would continue to rag us in the hostel at night.” The sources said 31 students of Class IX had planned to flee from the school at first.

But for some unknown reason, only 19 managed to get out. The students were planning to meet the deputy commissioner today to complain about the torture they had been going through in the past few days. When this correspondent asked a few students of the same class as to why had they not reported the matter to the school authorities, they said Class XII tests were on and so they thought the matter would not be taken seriously.

According to the sources, the students believed that the school authorities wouldn’t be able to resolve the matter in a fair way. So they took the matter into their own hands and decided to inform the district administration instead. Apparently, the school authorities did take the matter a bit casually. Principal Anuradha T. said, “There was a small fight on Sunday morning involving some students and may be, the other students got scared because of that and tried to flee.”

Later on, however, the 11 Class XII students allegedly involved in the ragging were identified and suspended for 10 days — same as the suspension term of the 19 “escapees”. Hailakandi deputy commissioner Shamsher Singh visited the residential school today on hearing about the incident and ordered an investigation.

“The district administration has appointed sub-divisional officer (Sadar) Naba Kumar Deka Baruah to investigate the matter,” he said. No complaint, however, has been lodged with police in this regard, as the students injured in the “demonstration” and their parents have chosen to remain silent. Last month, seniors beat up 16 Classes VII and VIII students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Ransaidram, at Basugaon in Chirang district in what was described as another case of ragging.

Ragging horror on tech campuses

http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2013-08-26/kolkata/41454622_1_besu-complaint-security-guards

KOLKATA: Ragging has started showing its ugly face in tech campuses here, within days of the new academic session. Two complaints were registered on Thursday and Friday, one at the Bengal Engineering and Science University (Besu) and the other at one of the state's leading private tech colleges.

On Thursday, a first-year student of the metallurgy department at Besu complained that he was dragged inside a hostel occupied by senior boys, severely beaten up and abused. The boy is from Bihar and stays in a room in hostel No. 9, a hostel that's exclusively meant for first-year boys, to protect them from being ragged by seniors. According to his complaint, the incident happened around 5.30pm as the boy was returning to his hostel after getting some reference material photocopied.

As he was walking past hostel No. 7, he was allegedly stopped by five senior boys who then gagged and dragged him inside. As the boy came out of the hostel in a completely dishevelled state, the security guards discovered him and asked him what had happened. After he told them that he was ragged and beaten up by seniors, the security guards took the boy to the anti-ragging cell comprising faculty members and administrative staff of Besu, and a complaint was registered based on the victim's statement.

The victim was then taken back into the hostel, where he identified the culprits. The members of the anti-ragging cell informed vice-chancellor A K Ray, who was out of station. But Ray ordered an investigation to be launched immediately a report be given to him on Monday. "I have just returned and am appalled at the complaint.

I have sought the report on Monday and will decide on the punishment immediately. Besu is a zero-tolerance campus when it comes to ragging and I promise strict action," said Ray on Sunday. The victim, said varsity sources, has been assured of safety and is on campus. The authorities, however, are not sure whether the perpetrators of the crime are still on campus, since they are from the city and are likely to have gone back home over the weekend. On Friday, a similar complaint reached Save, an anti-ragging NGO, from a first-year student of BBA at a private tech college.

The student was part of a group of 18. This group, according to the complaint, was accosted by their seniors on the college grounds, abused in filthy language, ordered them to take off their belts and were given certain "codes" to be followed on campus. The first-years were allegedly asked to introduce themselves and every time a student did that, he/she was greeted with jeers and foul language.

The complainant has sought the intervention of the NGO. "We have lodged an anonymous complaint because the victims are scared. We have informed the college authorities and have also sent a copy of the complaint to the national anti-ragging helpline," said Kushal Banerjee, spokesperson for Save.

12 AMU medical students booked for ragging

http://ibnlive.in.com/news/12-amu-medical-students-booked-for-ragging/417103-3-242.html

Twelve students of the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College at Aligarh Muslim University have been booked for allegedly ragging a junior, police said. The case was registered on Saturday on the basis of a complaint filed by Jawed, a third-year student of the college.

According to police, Jawed, who is in his third-year at the college, had Saturday lodged a complaint of ragging against the 12, all of whom are fourth year students. The complainant, a boarder of Hadi Hasan Hall, said that the accused had confronted him inside the hostel earlier in the week and ragged him, causing him great "mental agony".

Meanwhile, AMU Proctor Jamshed Siddiqui on Sunday said that they were waiting for the police report before taking any action in the matter. He added that the university had also opened a separate probe into the allegations.

He, however, pointed out that preliminary inquiries by police suggested that the "issue does not pertain to ragging but stems from a confrontation between two students".

"The complainant is a third-year student, so the charge of ragging appears far-fetched," he added. Siddiqui said that in his initial report to university authorities, the complainant had not used the word "ragging", which had been added to the complaint as an afterthought. He, however, stated that, "anyone found guilty would face strict disciplinary action".

http://www.hindustantimes.com/India-news/MadhyaPradesh/MP-Victim-s-father-alleges-indifference-to-ragging/Article1-1109570.aspx

The father of a victim of ragging in college has said that the principal and police did not heed his complaint when he tried to apprise them of the matter. The victim, Harsh Chauhan, 18, a B.Sc first-year student, is undergoing treatment in hospital with serious injuries on his head and left eye.

While the principal of the college, Sunanda Raguhuvanshi said Harsh tried to “sexually harass” some girls and then senior students retaliated against this, station house officer Pragya Arya said the girls with whom Harsh had “misbehaved” assaulted him.

When asked whether the girls concerned had approached her on this, Raguhuvanshi said, “No, they fear it will bring them a bad name.” Harsh said: “On the day (August 14) when six seniors attacked and injured me badly, I went to the college principal with a bleeding head to ask her for help but instead of helping me, she asked me to leave her room and closed the doors of the chamber.

Later, I went to the police station, where two seniors of my college were present. They insisted that I do not lodge a complaint against anyone. Despite their warning, I went ahead and lodged the complaint but the police also asked me not to blow the issue out of proportion.”

Double trouble for Bakatullah University Institute of Technology, student files ragging plaint

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bhopal/Double-trouble-for-Bakatullah-University-Institute-of-Technology-student-files-ragging-plaint/articleshow/21873274.cms

BHOPAL: Nothing seems to be going right for Bakatullah University Institute of Technology (BUIT) these days. Two days after students raised a stink over poor lab facilities and shortage of faculty, institute authorities have another problem on their plate on Friday.

A first year mechanical engineering student of the institute registered a complaint against seniors on the UGC helpline. Incidentally, it is the fourth time in a week's time when a student from Bhopal registered a complaint of ragging on the UGC helpline. Earlier, three students of MANIT filed complaints of ragging on the UGC helpline.

In his complaint, BUIT student highlighted juniors were being mentally and physically harassed. He claimed that second year students are also making juniors' life miserable on the campus and in hostels. "I was asked to do unnecessary things. When I refused I was beaten up," said the student without quoting his name. In his complaint, student said though scared, he was ready to identify seniors who had beaten him. He has requested authorities to take necessary steps at the earliest.

A junior student, on condition of anonymity, said, "Complaint by a student on UGC helpline is not surprising. Ragging in BUIT is common for many years. There is no one to take care of junior students." Sources said, ragging took place in Jawahar hostel. Despite repeated efforts by UGC helpline, vice-chancellor Professor Nisha Dubey and registrar Dr Sanjay Tiwari could not be contacted as their cell-phones were switched off.

Efforts by TOI to contact the two authorities also proved futile. Barkatullah University, late in the night, issued a press note claiming that there was no incident of ragging on the campus

2 students quit Kolkata institute after ‘ragging’

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/2-students-quit-kolkata-institute-after-ragging/1156358/

Two students have withdrawn their admission from the Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI) in Kolkata after being allegedly ragged. Amir Suhail and Vaanchit Kundlia, who joined the institute on August 7 this year, have also filed an FIR at the Taratala Police Station in this regard.

When Amir informed his father, Suhail Ahmed, about the alleged physical punishment and threats from his seniors, Ahmed contacted the Anti-Ragging Cell in New Delhi, which forwarded the complaint to college Director M K Ghosh on August 10.

Amir has also alleged the institute director told him that the seniors had the "right" to slap their juniors and that it is for their own benefit. The parents of the two are now demanding that the initial admission fee paid to the college, which amounts to Rs 1,17,500 each, be refunded. The institute director Ghosh denied the allegations, saying the reports have been exaggerated.

Teacher beaten up for preventing ragging

http://www.hindustantimes.com/India-news/Bhopal/Teacher-beaten-up-for-preventing-ragging/Article1-1107400.aspx

A guest teacher at Government Thakur Ranmat Singh College in Rewa district was beaten up by two senior students on Monday morning, after he prevented them from ragging first year students. The incident comes just five days after a girl student of a pharmacy college in Bhopal committed suicide having been ragged by seniors.

Interestingly, earlier in the morning, students of BCom first year of the college had made a complaint with the national anti- ragging helpline of the University Grants Commission, saying that the senior students were harassing them and beating them up regularly. According to Civil Lines police, around 10.10am on Monday, when the guest teacher Jitendra Shukla was taking English class of first year students at the college, the two accused–Mehfuz Khan and Nitesh Tiwari–barged into the class and told the teacher to leave as they wanted to rag the juniors. When the teacher refused to allow them, the accused abused and assaulted him, in-charge of the Civil Lines police station, Sandeep Ayachi told HT over telephone.

Upon the complaint of the teacher, the police have registered cases against the two accused under multiple sections, including assault, criminal intimidation, preventing government servant from discharging duties and forcing to commit offence (in this case becoming an accomplice in ragging). Mehfuz is a son of a police constable and has a past record of multiple crimes, mainly intimidation and assault.

Both are absconding and the police have launched a manhunt for them. Despite repeated attempts on the landline of the college and on the cell phone, principal of the TRS College, AP Mishra, could not be contacted for comment. Earlier in the morning, after getting a telephonic complaint from the BCom first year students of TRS College, the authorities of the national anti-ragging helpline contacted the principal of the college, vice-chancellor of Avadesh Pratap Singh (APS) University, Rewa, and superintendent of police of Rewa Akash Jindal, urging them to take immediate steps to resolve the issue. when contacted, vice chancellor of APS University, RM Mishra, said he had been intimated about the ragging complaint by the anti-ragging helpline.

He said now that he has also been informed about the assault on teacher, he would talk to the principal of the college on the both the issues and ask him to take suitable action. “The university-level antiragging monitoring committee would also conduct a probe into the incidents and we would initiate action after the report,” the VC said. Ragging: MANIT brass in denial mode, cops meet complainant

http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2013-08-13/bhopal/41372484_1_manit-dr-appu-kuttan-maulana-azad-national-institute

BHOPAL: Sticking to their stand for second straight day, authorities in Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT) have termed a complaint lodged on UGC helpline as fake. Police on Monday confirmed that there was a complaint and they met the complainant. "After receiving details, I contacted father of the complainant.

He was satisfied with promptness shown by the police after receiving ragging complaints on the helpline," said SP Bhopal (South) Anshuman Singh. About the complaint he said, "It was a complaint of general nature by a student stating that juniors are facing trouble from seniors. Student is from MANIT." Asked about the identity of the student, he said, "Student's name cannot be disclosed at any level of the process."

Interestingly, MANIT director Dr Appu Kuttan claimed that the complaints filed on UGC helpline are absolutely fake. "I personally met first year students and they did not say anything about the complaint on the helpline," he said. Dr Kuttan added that he spoke to the UGC and assured them the campus is ragging-free.

He said the only incident that took place on MANIT campus was a fight between third year and final year students about 15 to 20 days ago. "It was not ragging. I had immediately suspended seven students including 6 from final year and one from third year. I will not tolerate any ragging or fight among students," he said. MANIT will soon launch a helpline to deal with ragging complaints.

"The helpline number will be displayed on official portal of MANIT. Students can contact me directly any time if they are facing ragging issues." Security personnel stepped up vigil on the campus.

Pharmacy student commits suicide over ragging

http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2013-08-07/bhopal/41166286_1_suicide-note-extreme-step-private-college

BHOPAL: Perturbed over ragging by senior students a second year bachelor of pharmacy (B Pharm) student of a private college, allegedly committed suicide at her house in Kamla Nagar on Tuesday evening. Deceased Anita Sharma, 18, stated ragging by seniors as the reason for her to take the extreme step in her suicide note.

A case regarding abetment of suicide would be registered after investigation, the police said. The police have recovered a four-page handwritten suicide note and deceased's mobile phone from spot. In the first two pages of the suicide note, the deceased stated about torture by senior girl students of RKDF College where she studied while the second half of suicide note was dedicated to her family members. The deceased had started the note by stating that she was harassed by seniors, particularly four girl students for over a year.

When they continued to torture her even after she reached II year she was not left with any option but to end her life, the suicide note said. Anita has named other students, including her classmates, who were aware about the treatment being meted to her. Though she did not explain the exact incident that led her to take the extreme step, she mentioned that she was asked to do something objectionable, besides being asked to dance, sing and was repeatedly humiliated in front of other college students. She alleged that boyfriends of the girl students, who tortured her, were also harassing her and she had refused to share her mobile number with them.

Anita, a resident of Jeevan Vihar near PNT Square, lived with her mother, two elder sisters, niece and brother here while her father Kamlesh Sharma, a liasoning officer with a private firm, works in Mumbai. The deceased, youngest in the family, had returned home in the afternoon and told her bother Hemant, an engineering student, that she was being tortured by her seniors in college. Hemant advised her to talk about it with their father so that he could take up the matter with the college authorities.

Police said Anita's mother, Nirmala and sister Priyanka, a B Com student were in Jaipur to submit a form in Priyanka's college, while her eldest sister, Sarita had gone out for work when Anita committed suicide. After the conversation, Hemant left for market in the evening and Anita was at home with her niece Shruti, a minor girl. She apparently told Shruti not come to her room and allegedly hanged herself. Her body was noticed when Sarita returned home at 8 pm.

Police and her parents were informed. The post-mortem was conducted on Wednesday after her mother and sister returned from Jaipur and father, who was in Jabalpur in connection with some work, reached home. In her suicide note to the family, the deceased wrote to her parents that she loved them and asked her brother to make it big in life. Anita, whose birthday was to fall on August 15, also requested her parents to perform her last rites in a pink dress.

Senior expelled after newcomer reports ragging to HRD ministry

http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2013-07-31/jaipur/40913936_1_hrd-ministry-ncert-national-cell

AJMER: A newcomer in the Regional Education Institute was ragged so severely by a senior that he left the session after a few days of joining. Parents of the victim reported the matter to college administration but no action was taken.
The victim then made a complaint to the national cell of HRD ministry with a recording on his mobile phone. On the instructions of the ministry, the institute on Tuesday initiated action and expelled the accused from the hostel.

The Regional Education Institute is running a programme of BSc BEd wherein students from all over the country apply to get admission. The institute is run by NCERT. According to sources, a boy from Haryana took admission in the institute and was allotted a hostel here. Third year student Dharmraj Meena called the boy on phone and ragged him. "He is the leader of seniors and humiliated me so much that it was not possible for me to study there," said the victim in his complaint. The boy narrated the incident to his parents who rushed to Ajmer and talked to the principal but they got no response. The victim then left the institute and filed a complaint with the national cell of HRD ministry.

Ministry forwarded the complaint with serious remarks to the NCERT, directing them to investigate the matter. Sources say that if ragging incidents are reported in any educational institute, the institute has to lodge FIR against the accused. Looking to the seriousness of charges, the NCERT instructed the institute to take action in the matter.

On Monday, principal of the institute V K Kakaria called a meeting of the anti-ragging committee, "The committee led by dean is looking into the matter. There are serious charges of ragging. We have identified the accused senior," said Kakaria. Sources said that the committee asked the accused to leave the hostel immediately. "There is a recording of ragging of the victim by the senior and, therefore, we do not need to investigate much," said an official.

Ragging terror in school, 16 hurt - Class XII boys beat up juniors, authorities accused of covering up incident

http://www.telegraphindia.com/1130801/jsp/frontpage/story_17180769.jsp#.Ug_Ri5L7CK

Kokrajhar, July 31: Altogether 16 students of Classes VII and VIII were severely beaten up by their seniors in Class XII in what is being described as a “ragging incident” at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Ransaidram, at Basugaon town in Chirang district. The incident took place in a common room on Monday evening but came to light the following day when a guardian went to see his son at the hostel.

Three boys — Class VII student Danjit Kumar Brahma and Class VIII students Jitamitra Basumatary and Anjalu Basumatary — were admitted to a hospital in Kokrajhar. Jitamitra’s shoulder was fractured. According to Danjit, some senior students called them to the common room and started beating them with sticks and kicked them. They warned the junior students not to inform their teachers or guardians about the incident “or more punishment would follow”.

The trigger for this incident is still unclear but sources said it could be the result of an altercation that took place in the canteen a few days ago when some senior students tried to snatch food from a few juniors. School authorities have apparently tried to cover up the incident. The guardian of one injured student, D.K. Brahma, said: “The school principal called me and said that my son was ill but he didn’t inform me about the incident even when I met him in his chamber.

When I met my son, I noticed the injury marks on his body and when I asked him how he got them he told me about the whole incident.” “Later I found out that 16 students were badly beaten up, but the institute is taking it casually. How can such a major incident happen and school authorities claim not know anything about it,” he asked.

Some of the injured students said they had been physically assaulted many times earlier but this time was the worst. Family members of the victims have lodged an FIR at Basugaon police station. Principal of the institute S.K. Tiwary termed the incident “unfortunate” and said disciplinary action would be taken against the students involved.

He said the incident had sparked resentment among the student community in the school complex. BTC executive member in-charge of the education department Derhasat Basumatary strongly condemned the incident and urged school authorities and the district administration to take stern action against the guilty students.

In yet another case of group clash between students of Kerala studying in a college here, four students were attacked by a 19 member-gang led by a student of the same college. Sources said that the attack was a sequel to a dispute over a ragging incident. Police said, Egna (18), a native of Calicut in Kerala, had recently joined the Master of International Business course in CMS College of Science and Commerce.

Nikil Bibi (24) who also hailed from Kerala, a senior in the same course, allegedly ragged Egna a few days ago. The girl informed the incident to his friend Subesh, who was studying in the same college. Subesh, along with his friend, allegedly beat up Nikil and warned him not to disturb the girl.

To take revenge for the attack, Nikil along with a gang of 18, went to the house of Subesh and attacked him with deadly weapons. The gang also attacked three friends of Subesh. While Subesh and his friends attempted to escape from the spot, the gang chased and attacked them again. On information from locals, police rushed to the spot and arrested 19 persons, including Nikil. “Several weapons have been seized from the arrested persons,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police Murugasamy.

NHRC seeks report over ragging in Assam

http://twocircles.net/2013aug06/nhrc_seeks_report_over_ragging_assam.html

Guwahati : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notice to the Assam government asking for a report within four weeks on a ragging case where senior students allegedly thrashed 12 minor students in a school in the state's Chirang district.

The incident occurred on the night of July 29 when some students of Class 12 thrashed 12 students of Class 7 and 8 with sticks after they evaded a ragging session. After beating them up, the seniors threatened them with dire consequences if they complained to the residential school's authorities. All the victims were new to the school.

The NHRC took suo moto cognizance of news reports on the incident and observed that if true, the reports raise a serious issue of violation of human rights. Though the school authorities tried to hush up the incident, parents of the victims lodged complaints with police. The NHRC issued notice to secretary, elementary and school education, Assam and district magistrate and superintendent of police. The commission has also asked the district magistrate of Chirang to inform it about the health of the injured students.

Ragging raises stink at JB College Panel to probe harass charge

http://www.telegraphindia.com/1130727/jsp/northeast/story_17162843.jsp#.Ug_JPpL7CK8

Jorhat, July 26: The anti-ragging committee of JB College constituted a four-member panel today to look into allegations of ragging in the boys’ hostel last night.

This came in the wake of a sting operation by TV channels showing footage of activities, resembling ragging, in a room in the hostel. A TV channel has deposited the entire footage to the college authorities so that the probe could be conducted at the earliest.

Principal Bimal Barah said preliminary questioning of students could not establish that ragging had taken place. “None of the junior or senior students, who were separately questioned by me, admitted to ragging. According to our findings, the rehearsal for the freshers social, to be held in the hostel in a few days, was on. This was being done with permission from us.

The footage was taken of the common room where the practice was on,” he said. Barah said the seniors were instructing the students on how to dance and how to do march past properly “maybe in a rough manner but this cannot be construed as ragging in the true sense where a student is tortured or beaten”. On the march past, Barah said it was part of the practice.

On one of the students being made to hold his ears and kneel down, Barah said he was a second year student who was forced to do so by seniors (graduate students) “as he was speaking in a foul tongue with juniors” while explaining the moves.

The principal said no senior or junior student has complained to the authorities. “We are yet to go through the entire footage and no student will be spared if identified to be ragging a junior,” he added. Regarding the row of students sitting outside semi-clad on the verandah, he said he had identified all of them to be seniors who were cooling themselves outside because of the heat.

“Maybe from a distance they looked like juniors as one or two were standing in front of them and lecturing but I saw that all those students were senior students.” The principal said hostel warden N. Bhuyan, a teacher of the zoology department, had done the rounds till 11pm.

On why the students were allowed to stay up that late for social practice, he said since classes were held during the day and the students completed their studies in the evening, they had sought permission for the practice to be held after dinner.

Saying that the college does enforce discipline, he said they had expelled a student last week for drinking as he was a second time offender, while three others who been caught for the first time were let off. “The other night, when the college freshers’ social was on and some elements had created an incident which was taking an ugly turn, I called in the police.” Additional deputy commissioner Dijen Singh and members of the college’s anti-ragging committee said if the panel found anyone guilty, action would be taken according the anti-ragging act.

“We have got the footage and are on a fast track to go into the root of the matter. If anyone is found guilty, he will be expelled. But if this is not ragging as it appears, we cannot harass innocent students,” Singh said. The police said no complaint had been lodged by either the college authorities or any student so far.

Jorhat superintendent of police Sanjukta Parasor said the police would also identify the students after going through the footage and conduct a separate inquiry. “If it is ragging, then the matter is very serious and will be dealt with accordingly,” she said.

Those involved in the operation said they had zoomed their camera in on the common room located on the ground floor from the road but refused to say how they could be at the same place at the same time. The principal said vested interests could be involved in the matter but refused to divulge any more.

‘Secret ragging’ strikes at HCU hostels

Hyderabad: Despite stringent laws, ragging is still a part and parcel of a freshman’s life at the prestigious University of Hyderabad. The new academic year has started this month at the university and according to freshmen of the MCA department, their seniors have set in place many “rules and regulations” for them apart from regular “midnight abuses” in the hostel rooms.

A student from the MCA department under condition of anonymity said, “Over the last three days, I have been mentally harassed and threatened by seniors. They call us to a room in F hostel at midnight and ask us to do things that we can’t do.

They compel us to sing and dance and if we refuse, they abuse us in foul language and threaten us with dare consequences.” “If any of us have a stylish beard or moustache, they ask us to shave it,” said the student, who took admission a week back. Freshers are forced to buy food for seniors, said a source adding that the ragging will continue till the fresher’s party, which will take place in end August or beginning of September.

Sources said that many MCA freshers in the hostels, especially the “F” hostel, are subjected to mental harassment every night. They are forced to address their seniors as ‘sir’ and are made to wear full-sleeve shirts throughout the day and even while sleeping.

They are also not allowed to befriend students from other departments. None of the freshers have approached the university or the police due to fear. “It’s a secret torture. None of us are able to approach the administration because we have to depend on our seniors throughout the course and even for our job placements.

If anyone acts against their orders, they will sideline us in class and lab works, which will affect our careers,” said an MCA student, adding that they have to do many group assignments with the help of senior students. Varsity denies charges Officials of the University of Hyderabad have denied allegations of ragging stating that no student had filed any complaints.

“We have not come across any such complaint. But if this ‘secret ragging’ is going on among MCA students, we will strengthen our vigil.

We will take strong action against the culprits after finding them with the help of the anti-ragging squad, hostel wardens and security,” said UoH dean of student welfare B.V.S. Sharma.

He added that anyone can approach him, even anonymously, and lodge a complaint. “And we will take strong action if anybody is found guilty.” Chandanagar police officials said that they would investigate if a complaint was filed on the issue.

RANCHI: A recent case of ragging at Lala Lajpat Rai Public School has taken everyone by surprise. Four students were beaten up by their seniors on July 5. The victims had to be treated at a local hospital. Though the culprits have been expelled, it has once again raised questions on how serious institutes are about implementing anti-ragging measures.

While most of the schools and colleges claim that ragging forbidden on campus, there are always a few cases every year, at times even violent. A similar case was observed last year at National Institute of Foundry and Forge Technology (NIFFT) when a group of seniors broke into the hostel room of the newcomers, ragged them, broke the windows and belongings.

Cases of inhuman ragging have definitely decreased over the past few years and now boiled down to interactive sessions between the seniors and the juniors. However, some students do enjoy troubling the newcomers. Psychiatrists say those who are suppressed in their family turn out to be bullies in schools and colleges.

Director of Ranchi Institute of Neuro-Psychiatry and Allied Sciences (RINPAS), Dr Amool Ranjan said, "Most of the students who rag their juniors are suppressed or ill treated at home. They take out their frustration by ragging and bullying their juniors."

Principals of various colleges and schools claim that ragging is banned. "We have a very strict law when it comes to ragging. A single complaint is enough to get the student expelled from college. We also have an anti-ragging squad which keeps an eye on the students when the new session starts," said principal of Ranchi Women's College, Manju Sinha.

Students on the other hand think that healthy ragging is okay. Akansha Kapoor, a student of St. Xavier's College in Ranchi said, "The first day I confronted my seniors I was really scared but all they asked me to do was sing a song and crack some jokes. At first I was nervous but thereafter, I became good friends with my seniors. I think ragging is a way to get to know your seniors better."

Cops book high school boys for ragging

http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2013-07-02/hyderabad/40328645_1_three-boys-errant-students-school-head-mistress

GUNTUR: Perhaps for the first time in the state, at least three high school students were booked under anti-ragging laws here on Monday. The police slapped cases under section 509 of IPC, section 4(1) of AP prohibition of ragging act against three SSC students of a municipal high school in the city.

Police registered an FIR three days after receiving a formal complaint from the school HM against the students. Police acted in the case only after the municipal commissioner K Venkateswarlu debarred all the three students from studying in the municipal school for misbehaving with a female student of the same school.

According to information, about four days ago, the girl, Kavati Sankara Rao of municipal high school at R Agraharam colony in the city took objection to the behavior of three boys in her class and warned them that she would complain to the school HM. Sources said that the boys reportedly entered into wordy duel with the girl while leaving the school the same day and threatened her of serious consequences if she lodged a complaint against them.

The next day, the boys reportedly took the water bottle of the girl from her bag and filled it with urine mixed with coke and kept it back in her bag during the recess. Unaware of the mischief, the girl reportedly consumed the contents and vomited in the school. Teachers in the school immediately sent her home and informed the head mistress K Sarala Devi. Upon information, the parents of the girl approached the police and lodged a complaint on Friday.

The police, however, did not book a case against the boys immediately saying that the issue was sensitive and involved the future of the children. The police reportedly even made an attempt to 'settle' the matter through a panchayat where they summoned the parents of the boys and held negotiations.

However, the issue took a new twist after the municipal commissioner Venkateswarlu acted tough against the errant students on Monday. The commissioner ordered the dismissal of all the three students - Sashank, Manikantha and Abhiram from the school and ensured they were given TCs within an hour of the issue coming to his notice. "We cannot spare such children in our schools," he told TOI.

Following the commissioner taking the decision, the police called the school head mistress H M Sarala Devi and registered the case against the three boys. Defending the delay in registering a case, police said that they had only been probing the matter before booking the case. Lalapet CI Ramanjaneyulu said that they would arrest the accused shortly and send them to the juvenile board.

http://newindianexpress.com/states/odisha/11-engineering-students-held-for-ragging/2013/05/14/article1588021.ece

Police on Saturday arrested 11 students of Purushottam Institute of Engineering Technology (PIET) at Mandiakudar near Kansbahal of Sundargarh district on the charges of ragging the junior students.

Reports stated that the ragging by second and third year students of PIET landed them in trouble when two of the victims mailed complaints to the anti-ragging cell of University Grant Commission (UGC) and the PIET authorities.

The UGC cell forwarded the complaint to Sundargarh SP Sanjeev Arora while the college authorities forwarded it to Rajgangpur police. The errant students were arrested and taken to Sundargarh district headquarters to be produced in court.

They returned to the institute Saturday night after the court granted them bail. Rajgangpur IIC MR Pradhan said the junior students were banned from wearing casual dress even during leisure period and were forced to wear uniform all the time by the seniors.

After complying the diktat for a week, they revolted and a clash ensued on Thursday following which the two victim students wrote to the anti-ragging cell. PIET Director KM Purohit said the institute has taken serious note of the incident. The disciplinary and anti-ragging committees of the institute would shortly take a decision on the errant students, he added.

Ragged by seniors, student jumps in front of train

http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2013-05-12/mumbai/39202910_1_suicide-note-two-students-government-railway-police

MUMBAI: A second-year student of a Navi Mumbai college killed himself on Friday by jumping in front of a local train, allegedly because he was being ragged by two of his fellow students for the past several months. The victim, 19-year-old Nitin Balu Padalkar, left a suicide note in which he named the two students for harassing him.

The Government Railway Police (GRP) in Kalyan said they will question the two students named in the suicide note on Monday when the college reopens. A case of unnatural death under Section 174 of Criminal Procedure Code has been registered though they said preliminary inquiries suggest it was a case of ragging. Nitin was a second-year student of electronics and telecommunications in the Ramrao Adik Institute of Technology, which is affiliated to the University of Mumbai and is part of the D Y Patil Group.

College officials could not be contacted despite repeated attempts. The state government and the university have called for reports on the incident. Nitin, who killed himself a day after his second-year final exams began, lived with his father Balu, who works as a labourer, mother Kamal and younger sister Nisha in the Kolsewadi area of Kalyan (East).

Ragging is a crime under the Maharashtra Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1999, and institutes are supposed to have strict mechanisms to stop it. "The government will check if a mechanism to halt ragging as suggested by the Centre and the Raghavan committee was in place in the institution," said a bureaucrat in the higher and technical education department. Nitin was found on the tracks by motormen at 8.10pm on Friday, who alerted the Vithalwadi stationmaster.

The GRP officials were rushed to the spot and the victim was taken to Rukminibai Hospital in Kalyan, but doctors declared him dead on arrival. The victim's family corroborated the details in the suicide note saying Nitin had been depressed because of the harassment meted out to him by the students mentioned in the note. "As my brother was good in studies, two of his classmates had been ragging him since October. They harassed him over petty issues," Nitin's younger sister Nisha told TOI.

She added, "Over the past four days, my brother had been very depressed about the continuous harassment and could not concentrate on his studies. Seeing my brother upset, even my mother wanted to complain about the harassment to college authorities, but Nitin told her not to do so because the two students would then tease him for being the boy who brought his mother to complain."

On Friday, Nitin had left the house around 6pm telling his parents that he was going to meet a friend in the Chinchpada area, but he never returned. The family received a call from police at 8.50pm informing them of Nitin's death. S G Nirmal, Kalyan GRP police inspector said, "Preliminary investigations show it is ragging, as Nitin was depressed over the harassment by two fellow students. On the basis of the suicide note, we will question both the students once college starts on Monday. If needed, we will invoke the anti-ragging Act."

BHU student alleges communal abuses and insults

http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/bhu-student-alleges-communal-abuses-and-insults/article4750802.ece

Why don’t you go to Aligarh? What are you doing here? Such questions are posed almost every day, he says A student of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has alleged that university officials are pressing him to withdraw a complaint he recently lodged with the University Grants Commission over his “ragging” by a junior.

Twenty-two-year-old Mahtab (name changed), third-year student of Linguistics (Honours), said he was subjected to “communal abuses and insults” by a second-year student at his hostel on May 10, and after he registered a complaint, he was being threatened and abused by the student and his friends.

Mahtab initially complained to the hostel warden but found his response “unsatisfactory.” He then called up the UGC anti-ragging cell, which promptly registered his complaint and forwarded it to the BHU anti-ragging cell. The student alleged that authorities were pressuring him to withdraw the complaint and subjected him to “...counter-questioning.” “They asked me why I didn’t complain to the minority cell and [told me] that I shouldn’t have complained to the UGC as it has brought the university into disrepute,” Mahtab said.

His questioning was videographed. He also alleged that anti-ragging cell officials were pressing him to ignore the incident and learn to “compromise.” “Such things happen and I should ignore them and not let them hamper my career, the anti-ragging cell officials told me.

One official even told me that I would have to bow if I cared for my result.” The student said he was subjected to abuses and insults in the common room of a hostel on May 10, after which he was being regularly threatened and intimidated by students affiliated to right-wing groups. However, he claims this was not one-off. “Why don’t you [Muslims] go to Aligarh? What are you doing here?

We are asked such things almost every day. I will not withdraw my complaint,” he said. Meanwhile, the second-year student has filed a counter-complaint of physical and mental harassment against Mahtab. Anti-ragging cell head S.K. Srivastava denied the allegation that the university was trying to close the matter. “An enquiry is on, and a report will be submitted to the Vice-Chancellor in a stipulated time.

There’s no way the university has closed it off. But the counter-complaint… has made the case complex.”

Student alleges ragging at government college

http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2013-05-22/noida/39444157_1_student-union-leader-college-campus-college-officials

NOIDA: A first year BA student of the government degree college in Noida was allegedly ragged by his seniors accusing them of forcefully pulling down his pants right outside the principal's office.

The student, Ramesh Yadav, claimed that he was assaulted while he was in queue outside the principal's office to collect a laptop made available under a UP government scheme. When another student tried to help Ramesh, the accused allegedly assaulted him too. "I went to the principal's office at 10am. I was standing in line when a BA third year student, Pintu Yadav, made a derogatory remark.

When I opposed, he forcefully pulled my pants down. After seeing this, another senior Om Prakash Yadav, a M.Com final year student, came to the rescue. Pintu left the spot and returned with his friends and attacked us outside the campus when we were returning home," said Ramesh. An FIR has been filed by Om Prakash at Sector 39 police station alleging that Pintu, along with his friends Bobby Yadav, Ajay Yadav and Anil Yadav, assaulted him.

The FIR also states that in the assault Om Prakash was injured and received bruises on his shoulder and back. College officials, however, denied that any such incident took place within the college campus. "It's not a matter of ragging. A fight broke out between two groups outside the college premises.

After the fight, a student informed us and we immediately reported the incident to the police," said MC Jain, chief proctor. Other officials claimed that the clash was between two different student union groups. "Pintu is a student union leader and his group had a clash with another for attempting to take claim among the students for distribution of laptops," said an official.

Parents allege foul play in son’s death

Say his roommates were jealous of his talent and hard work

The death of a student of Sarada Institute of Science, Technology and Management has turned into a major controversy with the parents alleging that he was a victim of ragging.

The parents expressed anguish over the alleged casual approach of the college management and police authorities. The latter however, claimed that the student, Baka Prasanth Kumar, had committed ‘suicide’ as he had failed in the exams. Harikrishna and Sakuntala -- hailing from Jagatakeshavapuram of Sompeta mandal -- told the media here on Saturday that their son had scored high marks in the first year so there was no need for him to commit suicide.

They held three roommates of their son responsible for his death on February 24. Mr. Harikrishna said neither the college management nor the police had showed photos of their son to substantiate their claim that he had committed suicide by hanging. “My son used to face many problems with roommates who were jealous of his talent and hard work.

They might have killed him as one of his roommates failed in the examinations,” he said. “We approached Superintendent of Police K.V.V. Gopala Rao and sought a thorough inquiry into the incident. We also sought action against Sub-Inspector Narimani who supported the college management without hearing our version,” he added. Bharat Swambhiman Trust-Srikakulam president Swami Srinivasananda, AP BC Welfare Association leader P. Chandramouli, VHP leader Ch. Suryachandrasekhara Rao and YSR Congress leaders G. Narsunaidu and Y. Dhanunjay demanded that the case be reopened and justice rendered to the student’s family.

http://newindianexpress.com/states/kerala/article1533110.ece

The police have arrested seven Malayali students in connection with the death of P Deepak, 20, a Malayali student pursuing engineering at a self-financing college near Rasipuram in Namakkal district on Thursday evening.

Superintendent of Police P Kannammal said that seven students, whose chase led to the killing of Deepak, were held and were slapped with murder charges.

They are M Ashwanth, 20 (Balussery, Kozhikode), Davis K Cherian, 21 (Mallapally, Pathanamthitta), J Sebin John, 20 ( Manimalayil, Kannur), J Danis Johns, 21 (Srikantapuram, Kannur), A Sarath, 20, (Chennankalangode, Malappuram), J Lijo Joseph, 21, (Thamarassery, Kozhikode) and T Mithun Thomas, 20 (Perumpallimandalam, Malappuram).

Except Mithun Thomas who was a second year student, all the others were third year engineering students. “P Deepak, 20, and his friend J Dinesh, 19, both second year students of a self-financing engineering college located near Andagalur Gate, Rasipuram, were moving in a bike after the college hours and were chased by a gang of seven fellow students in a car.

One of the occupants of the car hit Deepak with an iron rode, following which he fell down and hit boulders lying on the side of the road. Deepak died on the spot while Dinesh suffered serious injuries,” P Kannammal said. Initially, the police assumed that it could be a hit-and-run incident but the truth came out only when one of the college staff who passed by the scene noticed a car fleeing.

He passed the information to the college authorities and subsequently to the cops, leading to the car being intercepted at the toll plaza at Omalur, Salem. Rasipuram SP S T Rajan said that seven students were held and slapped with murder charges.

They were staying at rented houses in Salem and commuting to the college by car. Preliminary investigations revealed that a petty quarrel at the college while collecting water from a cooler led to the killing of the student. “Deepak and Dinesh had forced their way to the cooler to collect water without minding their seniors. A scuffle had broken out and the seven students had warned them of dire consequences,” the SP said.

Bengal Engineering and Science University suspends six students for ragging

http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2013-03-23/kolkata/37960139_1_senior-students-besu-third-year-students

KOLKATA: The Bengal Engineering and Science University on Friday suspended six third-year students after a group of juniors accused them of ragging. They have been asked to leave the campus and the hostel immediately.

Governor M K Narayanan - the chancellor - had visited the prestigious campus only on Thursday. A complaint sent anonymously by some first-year students to the Besu professor in charge of student affairs said they were being asked to pay donations for an event organized by third-year seniors. By noon the complain reached Besu vice-chancellor A K Ray, who has set an example in the state by virtually eliminating ragging from the campus with his innovative ways of handling students.

An inquiry started immediately and the faculty members found the complaints to be true. "We have taken serious cognizance of the incident and have treated the matter as ragging. We suspended all the six senior students who were found to be guilty and have asked them to vacate their hostels till further orders. Another inquiry will be conducted," Ray told TOI.

Some students and faculty members felt that this was not a clear case of ragging as the money was being collected for fun, in which the juniors would have been involved too. But the key factor was that the freshers were allegedly being forced to pay up.

"We are not going to let our guard down when it comes to any kind of coercion. These senior students wanted to have fun purely at the expense of juniors and that cannot be tolerated," Ray said with finality. The governor had inaugurated a swimming pool and a six-storey building on Thursday.

Ragging? first-year student beaten up in Gurgaon

http://www.hindustantimes.com/India-news/Gurgaon/Ragging-first-year-student-beaten-up-in-Gurgaon/Article1-1029241.aspx

In a suspected case of ragging, a first-year student of a private engineering college was allegedly assaulted and abandoned at a Bilaspur park in an unconscious state on Tuesday.

The park is just a stone’s throw away from Gurgaon College of Engineering, where the victim is pursuing his mechanical engineering course. According to Tularam Gautam’s relatives, his seniors assaulted and forced him to consume liquor.

The 20-year-old is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Gurgaon. He is a resident of Vijay Enclave in Delhi. However, the college management dismissed the claims of the family. Dr Yateendra Tiwari, director of the college, said, “We have formed an inquiry committee to probe the matter.

Ragging is not possible during exams.” Pradeep Singh, a relative of the victim, said, “A group of senior students forced Gautam to consume liquor.

There are injury marks all over his body. The incident took place during lunch break after the exam was over. It must be the handiwork of the seniors as there was no outsider on the campus.” The victim’s relatives claimed that his mobile phone and wallet were also missing. Rahul Sharma, DCP (south), said, “Although the victim has regained consciousness, we are yet to record his statement.”

Two law students held for ragging, assault

http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Delhi/two-law-students-held-for-ragging-assault/article4504060.ece

“Six men assaulted for refusal to comply with orders to dance and do sit-ups” Two law students have been arrested for allegedly ragging and thereafter assaulting and intimidating a first year student of Delhi University’s Campus Law Centre in Delhi last week.

The victim alleged that six men had assaulted him following his refusal to comply with the orders of his seniors to dance and do sit-ups. Amit Kumar, a resident of Bhai Parmanand Colony, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Law degree at the Centre, alleged that the assault was a consequence of an argument he had with two of his seniors on March 7, the second day of the college’s annual fest which he was attending along with other fellow students.

The victim had complained that it was there that two of his seniors, Chandan Kumar and Narendra Yadav (both students of second year in the same course), came to him and asked him to join them for a dancing session in the college ground. “I refused but they kept insisting and even forced me to join them. I did not relent and left for home,” said Amit.

According to Amit, the following day while he was sitting outside his classroom with a few friends, Chandan and Narendra accompanied by several others reached there. They took the victim to a corner and ordered him to do sit-ups but once again, Amit refused to give in to their demands and tried to leave.

“At this, Narendra and Chandan waylaid me and along with their accomplices started punching and kicking me. When they saw several others coming, they left but threatened everyone present there of dire consequences if they told anyone about the incident,” he said.

Amit immediately made a call to the Police Control Room upon which several policemen reached the college. Amit also told the police that his wallet containing some money and important documents was missing since the incident. Based on his complaint, a case under sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 341(wrongful restraint), 379 (theft), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and 34 (common intention) was registered by the police against the accused.

The victim said that since the incident took place on the last working day before the Centre’s mid-term vacations, due to which there were no classes for a week from March 10, he could not inform the college authorities.

Both Chandan and Narendra were arrested from their house on Monday and were produced at a local court on Tuesday which sent them to judicial custody. Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Sindhu Pillai said the four other accused have also been identified and a search has been launched for them.
