Missing school boy still untraced

It's been a week since Rakesh Kumar, a class 12 student, was reported missing after a fight with junior classmates. The police are still clueless. Rakesh had joined Babu Hit Abhilashi Savhitkari Vidyamandir School in Mansa just four days before he was reported missing on the evening of May 5 when Rakesh had left home on his bike.

The police have been looking for him since but have not even been able to trace his bike. Rakesh's parents allege that their son was being ragged and has been kidnapped. "We brought Rakesh home after discussing the issue with the school principal.

Later in the afternoon Rakesh took out his bike, and has been missing since," Krishan Kumar, boy's father, said over the phone. School principal dismissed all allegations saying, "The parents' allegations of ragging are baseless. On May 5, the four juniors who had beaten Rakesh had later apologised to him and his parents in my office." "My child is a decent, quiet boy.

Four days ago, we had moved him from Government Senior Secondary School, Boha. My nephew Gaurav who is in class 11 in the same school had told us that students used to tease Rakesh but he would keep quiet," Krishan Kumar claims. The police believe that Rakesh left the house of his own free will. "We are investigating into the matter. After the fight Rakesh left his house on his bike. In preliminary investigation it seems the student had left home of his own free will. We have been looking everywhere for him including gurudwaras across the state," said, Sukhdev Singh Chahal, senior superintendent of police at Mansa.

Bangalore engineering student ends life after being ragged

A 20-year-old engineering student allegedly committed suicide by jumping before a moving train at Attibele village near Devanahalli on Saturday. In his suicide note V Alok Ranjan said his college seniors had ragged him over his love for a girl in their college.

The students of Nagarjuna College of Engineering and Technology at Mudagurki village on Hyderabad Road staged a protest following the death. They blocked Hyderabad Road (NH 7) for 30 minutes as part of their protest against the college management for failing to stop ragging in the institution. Bangalore Rural and Chikkaballapur police had to use a mild lathi charge to avoid any untoward incident and clear the road.

Ranjan, a native of Darbhanga in Bihar and a resident of Devanahalli, was a fourth-semester student of BE Electronic Communication. Deputy superintendent of police (railway) Mir Arif Ali said police had received information that a young person died on the railway track between Devanahalli and Avathi village around 9 am. Ranjan’s body and suicide note were found at the scene. “We have seized the letter and are verifying the reason behind his extreme step,” Ali said. Byappanahalli railway police have registered an unnatural death report (UDR) in connection with the incident and started investigation.

They shifted the body to Bowring Hospital for the postmortem, which will be held after Ranjan’s father reaches the city. “We have informed his parents and will hand over the body to them after the postmortem,” Ali said. A police source said in his suicide note Ranjan wrote that he was in love with a girl studying in the college and on Friday some senior students had ragged him about this. He had an argument with them regarding the matter and it came to the notice of the college management. He feared that disciplinary action might be taken against him, which made him take the decision to commit suicide.

Police said Ranjan might have committed suicide around 8 am and the passenger train from Bangalore City to Chikkaballabur might have run over him. His head was found separated from his body on the tracks. Police will question the college management to find out what exactly happened in the college and if they had decided to take disciplinary action against the students involved in the ragging and the argument after it, including Ranjan. The protesting students claimed that Ranjan did not commit suicide but was murdered.

4 Kashmiri students fear for their life

BHOPAL: A Kashmiri student of Barkatullah University has claimed that he and his three colleagues face a threat to their life after filing of a police complaint against a head of the department and some students of the university. Mohd Yousuf Parra, a post-graduate commerce student, alleged that the chief warden of Jawahar Lal boys' hostel in BU has threatened to kill me if I don't withdraw my complaints against the HoD and some students."

According to Yousuf, Dr SK Khateek, who is head of the commerce department of the University Teaching Department, is unhappy with him over his filing of two complaints. "I lodged a complaint with the VC about my and three other Kashmiri students' ragging. There was another complaint against the HoD about his poor semester marks without any proper reason," Yousuf said. "I am scared. I came here with some aspirations and now people here are calling me 'terrorist'. I don't know what will happen next day," Yousuf said in somewhat an anxious manner. He added the situation became serious when he made a complaint against Dr Khateek to the university authorities on March 29, earlier this year. Yousuf said after the complaint, the vice-chancellor's office gave a letter to the chief warden seeking explanation. Yousuf then lodged a complaint with the Bagh Sewania police station on April 20 wherein he had stated that Dr Khateek has been threatening him. "He has threatened me with dire consequences if I keep pursuing the complaint. I am also being threatened by unknown persons," Yousuf stated in the complaint.

The chief warden, Dr Khateek, denied allegations. "I do not have any idea about it. There is no problem in my hostel," Khateek claimed. On complaints by Yousuf, chief warden said, "He was not happy after his poor result in third semester. We have topper students from Kashmir. There has been no issue," Khateek said. In three hostels of Barkatullah University --Jawahar Lal, Munshi Premchand and Sanjay Gandhi-there are 200 students in each hostel. In all, 30 Kashmiri students live in these hostels.

Marine engineering cadet lands in hospital after ragging

KOLKATA: A 19-year-old marine engineering cadet is lying seriously injured in hospital with severe jaw, hip and head injuries after being brutally beaten up by two seniors on Wednesday.

The youth, who had cracked IIT-JEE to get a berth at Indian Maritime University in Taratala, was assaulted because he could not endure a three-hour-long 'physical exercise' session that is merely a garb for ragging by seniors.

The boy cannot move or speak. The doctors treating him are horrified by the severity of the beating.
TOI is withholding the identity of the victim and the two alleged raggers on his request. The teenager is determined to return to training once he gets well. "I worked hard to get here. So there is no reason to back out. With the support of teachers, friends, seniors and my family I am sure I will sail again. I just hope there is some limit to the ragging meted out to freshers," he told TOI, struggling to whisper each word.
The Delhi boy joined the prestigious institute around eight months ago. Since then he and all first-year students have been subjected to regular ragging sessions. According to them, only two seniors are involved in the sadistic torture.
On Wednesday morning, many freshers were pulled out of their beds at 4am by the duo and given physical exercises - push-ups, crawls and frog-jumps - for three hours. Towards the end, the Delhi boy collapsed on the ground, exhausted, and pleaded with the two third-year students to let him go just one time. But the two rained blows and slaps on him. He was hit some 40 times in the face. "I got an SMS from my son about the incident around 7.30am. His mother fainted on hearing this. I booked a ticket on the first available flight to Kolkata," said father P K Mishra, a central government employee.
He reached the hospital around 2pm and was shocked to see the bruises and injuries on his son's body. "Can you imagine? Forty continuous slaps in the face and several punches to his head and the back? He is unable to move. I immediately complained to the hostel warden verbally as being with him in hospital was more important," he said.
Doctors at Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI) said the boy will need long-term treatment. "There are injuries to the jaw, hip joint and head because of punches and blows. He is unable to move properly because of the hip injury and unable to eat and speak because of the jaw injury" said Dr T K Banerjee, who is treating him.
"Investigation is on to gauge the severity of the injuries. The boy might not need surgery. I am shocked to see such physical torture on a young boy. Those involved in the ragging should be given exemplary punishment," said CMRI consultant surgeon Dr P K Nemani.
Some students said that it is an unwritten rule in the institute for third-year students to rag freshers almost throughout the year. No one is supposed to report it to the authorities. But this time, the two seniors went a little too far. Most fourth-year students are out sailing. "The hostel warden and some fourth-year students who are back on the campus have recommended that these two students be punished," said a fourth-year student on condition of anonymity.
The Delhi boy had told his father about the continuous ragging but asked him not to complain to the authorities because he was not the only victim. All his batch-mates were being ragged. "The authorities have promised to take action against the guilty. In that case I will not file a complaint as I do not want a bad name for a prestigious institute like this," said Mishra.

Ragging rocks National Institute of Technology

WARANGAL: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) here was shaken by a ragging incident on Friday. Eleven junior students were reportedly ragged by 10 seniors. Three of the ragging victims were even beaten up by their seniors who later fled. Sources said the senior students called the junior students to Vikram Tarabai hostel block in the afternoon where the latter were subjected to ragging.

The juniors were playing cricket when the seniors trooped into the ground and started teasing them. Later, they were herded into the hostel block, locked up in a room and ragged by the senior students. Soon word about the ragging spread and NIT director T Srinivasa Rao and dean G Radhakrishnamaharya rushed to the block. Upon seeing the professors, the senior students fled from the hostel room. The chief warden later broke open the door and freed the 11 first year students. Kazipet police immediately started an enquiry. The NIT authorities maintained a stoic silence on the ragging.

Ragging continues in colleges

Srinagar: Even though ragging has been officially banned and is punishable by law but in valley’s premier professional collages the practice is very much in vogue, even though the intensity may have changed. As the new academic session is about to commence by April, some students who have recently sought the admission in professional colleges are apprehensive about the possible ragging incidents. Saba Javaid has been planning for long to get admitted in an engineering college for the much sought after MCA course.

This year after completing her BCA from the Government Women’s College, Saba is looking forward to pursue her master’s degree in the a college. However, after her friend informed her about the behaviour of seniors towards juniors in the college campus, Saba is concerned. “Initially I was very eager and excited about my admission in a professional engineering college. But after my friend told me about the kind of behaviour seniors have towards juniors, I got scared. It has made me to think whether or not I should stick to my decision”, Saba told The Kashmir Monitor.

Well placed sources revealed that the senior students more often are seen bullying the juniors and fresher’s. Fatima (name changed), an ex student of a professional college says that she along with her batch mates have been the victims of ragging throughout their stay in the college. “We had to wish the seniors every time we saw them. We were not allowed to call their names. We were told to refer to them as ‘Sir’ and ‘Ma’am’. Canteen was banned for juniors and we were not even allowed to move out of our class during the lunch break”, said Fatima.

As per the Jammu and Kashmir Prohibition of Ragging Act, 2011, “ from the date of commencement of the Act, ragging within or outside any educational institution in the State shall be prohibited and no person shall commit, abet, propagate or participate in ragging within or outside any educational institution”. “Our seniors really used to humiliate us. Boys were not allowed to wear jeans, only formal clothes. Girls were questioned out of blue. It was insulting”, added Fatima.

According to the act any person caught engaged in ragging has to pay a penalty. The act states, “Whosoever, directly or indirectly, commits or participates in or abets or propagates ragging within or, outside any educational institution shall, on conviction, be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years or with fine which may extend to ten thousand rupees or with both”. Meanwhile, last year a 3rd Semester Diploma student of the same institution was reported to be found ragging a fresher in the campus canteen.
